WhiRlygirl was missing me so I had to go for a visit

Nov 8 0800 The calm before the storm. The National Huricane Center has upgraded TS Eta to a Huricane.. expecting winds up to 65mph. I woke up early to remove the bimini as it could easily tear in these upgraded winds. There is a calm aire around the marina as everyone does last minute adjustments to lines etc...... WhiRlygirl is secured with extra lines and is very stable in the squalls that came in every once in a while through the night. Winds are suppose to increase steadily this afternoon as the precursor thunderstorms roll in. The water level is expected to see a 2-4' surge but has not yet arrived. I've sailed and been anchored in 40+kt squalls but have not seen winds forecasted like this. Im settling in for a rolly night of thunder boomers, wind and waves. Now its time for breakfast.

As I prep WhiRlygirl for her passage to her winter, home 8 ocean days from Marathon FL to Catskill NY I was prepared for a variety of weather. I was planning on subtropical breezes cruising with the Gulf Stream past Miami in the straits between the Bahamas and Florida coast. As the US coast line ducks west by Georgia and South Carolina we follow the current NNE towards Cape Hattaras. Reaching the edge where the Gulf Stream turns easterly, we change directions a little mor...e northerly towards New York City. Exiting the Gulf Stream we will experience the colder November waters of the Atlantic for 3 days. Eventually passing under the Verazano bridge, we enter New York City harbor and the Hudson river. Greeted by Lady Liberty, the next 140 miles (20 hours) is motoring with and against a 2 knot current arriving at HopONose Marina. We will unfortunately miss the beautiful Fall that NY is currently enjoying. That is the plan. My crew of three and myself were suppose to leave Nov 1 but alas the weather had a different agenda. Strong easterlies prevented us from leaving Marathon and now Huricane Eta is expected Sunday (Nov 8) night and into Monday morning. Now my focus is securing WhiRlygirl to face the 50kt winds and 10-15" of rain set to beseige me in the following 24hrs. A storm surge of 2-4' above high tide is forecasted. My dock lines will be below waterline. WhiRlygirl is secured to the dock with a spiderweb of lines. Anything loose is secured or stowed and as they say the hatches are all battened down. Currently it is raining moderately with a moderate wind. It will only get worse.....
