STORY BEHIND THE MATS 2nd Edition Hey GB Van Family! Thursday is the day to remember the old times! Today let’s meet a little bit more about Professor Chad!!! ... Check it out this amazing story! Enjoy!!! I discovered jiu-jitsu in 2009 after becoming interested in watching UFC events and began training when I was 19. Before that I played soccer, hockey, football and basketball growing up in Mississauga, Ontario. My biggest competition achievements include winning medals at the IBJJF World, Pan, European and American National Championships. Professor Rodrigo promoted me to black belt and heavily influenced my game since white belt emphasizing judo takedowns, closed guard, pressure passing and submitting from the mount. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to travel, teach and compete in many countries such as Germany, Italy, Japan, China and Brazil. Besides jiu-jitsu I enjoy lifting weights, watching documentaries, travelling and coffee. I graduated from UBC in 2014 with Bachelor’s Degree in History. Dear GB Van Family, Thank you so much for all your support during tough this year for GB Vancouver. A short 2020 recap:... January: We had the flood and a Parents and Kids class. February: We received our brand new mats! They are so shine, so BLUE! We loved it! Also, we had the 1st Gracie Barra BC Conference. March: First Women’s Self Defense Seminar in 2020. On March 16th, following the BC Government's recommendation, we decided to close GB Vancouver for the first time in almost 10 years. We alternated for daily Online classes. We organized the GB Dummy Challenge to incentive our students to continue actives at home. April: Easter Online Parents and Kids class and a Talent Show! May: On May 19th we could reopen our home following all the safety guidelines. Motorcycle Ride Club and Barra Fit 300 Global Challenge. February: We received our brand new mats! They are so shiny, so BLUE! We loved it! Also, we had the 1st Gracie Barra BC Conference. that could help us in all ways. Some of you could keep your memberships active and helped to keep part of our staff, some of you could help to carry stuff after the fire, many of you prayed for us or helped us on your way. It was fundamental for us. August: Professor Rodrigo launched the Law Enforcement Program. 2nd Free Women’s Self Defense Seminar of 2020 and the GB Summer Challenge was a huge success of views on your Youtube channel. September: 3rd Free Women’s Self Defense Seminar in 2020. October: GB NoGi Challenge and GB40+ class debut. THE FIRE - On Oct 22nd the French’s restaurant got fire and the firefighters stopped the fire in our ceiling, before the fire hit our beloved home. I grew up in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in the 90’s and Jiu Jitsu was striking hard in every corner at that time and still is, but for different reasons I’ve never had opportunities to get to know this lovely martial art and its philosophy behind it. I play tennis since I was 12 years oldI can say tennis and Jiu Jitsu are my passions and it will forever in my life. I work for the film/television/advertising industry which is the same kind of business I used to work back in Brazil. It’s hard work, for sure. You have to be resilient, and find creative solutions to old and new problems and I’m always trying to bring what I’m learning on the mats to my professional life, and it’s amazing when you realize the power of this knowledge exchange. In 2018, Fabio Bueno, a good friend of mine who’s a black belt under Professor Rodrigo Carvalho, invited me to a trial class which he was teaching at GB Vancouver, and I must confess I wasn’t excited to, at 42 years old, start something new in my life. And now I must confess I was completely wrong! I started training jiu jitsu 15 days before my son was born, and I remember leaving my cellphone with Mari at the reception in case my wife called saying baby was about to pop upBenjamin was born and then I had every reason on my plate to give up. Not sleeping well, not eating well, but I had the strength to go to GB Vancouver. I was physically devastated, but Jiu Jitsu kept my mind together and I started seeing things more clearly. I can’t say thank you enough to my wife for understanding how important that was for me at the time. I’m doing the ICP 2021 course to understand more about Gracie Barra philosophy. Dear Students, Starting on Monday, November 23rd all classes including Muay Thai and Boxing we be hosted at our new facility at 53 East Broadway. We won't have any classes happening at Ache Brasil Capoeira anymore. The one on one training is open to all classes: Muay Thai, boxing, Kids and Adults Jiu-jitsu.... Since the number of students is limited during to the restrictions and to keep everyone safe we are offering more options of time for all of you: - Monday to Friday from 6AM to 2PM and 4PM to 8PM - Saturday from 9AM to 12PM Also, due to this restriction we ask that each student book 2 classes per week so we can have a spot for everyone. STORY BEHIND THE MATS 2nd Edition Hey GB Van Family! Our Behind the Mats campaign is back!!! ... Thursday is the day to remember the old times! Today let’s meet a little bit more about Jon Hennessey!!! Check it out this amazing story! Enjoy!!! Like a lot of people in my age range, I discovered BJJ through watching Royce Gracie compete in the first UFC’s. My Dad has also had a lifelong interest in the pursuit of martial arts, studying Judo, Karate, Kung Fu and he is a Nidan in Yoshinkan Aikido. I grew up skateboarding and BJJ was the first martial art that I identified with. Both are a combination of athleticism, technique and creativity. For every trick you land, you come up short countless times and the study of BJJ is also an exercise in constant micro-adjustments. I started to train BJJ in LA about 20 years ago, but with work/travel commitments, it wasn’t the right time in my life to train consistently. I relocated to NY and started to train again, but it wasn’t until I moved back to BC that I found my BJJ community at GB Vancouver. I’ve been with GB for around 10 years and although I’ve had to pause my practice at different times for work or family commitments, I’ve always found my way back. Once you start to train, the seed has been planted and the doors are always open for your to return. I’ve worked as a Makeup Artist for 25 years and up until recently, my career has involved a lot of international travel. Being grounded in Vancouver has given me the opportunity to train more, so that’s a definite silver lining this year. One of the many things that I love about training at GB is the diversity of the people that you share the mats with. GB doesn’t attract one type of individual, it’s every age, body type, cultural background, level of athleticism, gender orientation and profession. In 2020, we’re navigating our way through different protocols, but the training doesn’t stop. Professor Rodrigo and the entire GB family have been quick to pivot and adjust according to the changing situations and at its core, that’s what BJJ is about.creative problem solving in real time. RESILIENCE: the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness. For almost 10 years at the same address, GB Vancouver overcame many difficult moments. The flood on December 31, 2019. Just after finishing our renovation and changing the entire floor, a problem in the old plumbing flooded our entire school and our tatami mats. It was estimated that it would take about 2 months to get back up from that. But within a week, we had already tidied up our house and classes ...returned. On March 16 of this year, at 8pm, after a decision from the BC government relating to the Covid-19 pandemic, we closed the school to guarantee the safety of our students and staff members. The day after closing, we were ready to offer online classes for adults and children. Our top priority was and still remains the well-being and health of our students. On May 19, the government allowed us to reopen with some security restrictions and protocols. We followed all of them to the letter. Day after day, it was wonderful to see the vast majority of you return and to personally witness your happiness after each classes. On October 22, the fire at the restaurant next to our school shook us deeply, once again. Even if the firefighters (our great heroes) managed to stop the fire that had spread to our roof, the incident compromised the structure of our building. We all agreed that we couldn’t leave our students without classes for about 5 months to do a full renovation. The very next day though, with in mind to always look for the best for our students, we had already emptied the space and were looking for a new home. The GB Family of BC welcomed our members by offering their mats to our 800+ GB Vancouver students. Capoeira Ache Brazil sublet us their space so that we can offer some classes in a temporary space while we are in negotiations for our final home. It was only possible for us to overcome all those obstacles because of your support. All of you contributed: either by keeping your membership active or requesting reactivation, donating to our fundraiser, helping to move the mats, furnitures and supplies or simply by sending us messages of support and prayers.
