Granville Island welcomes an old friend back to Ocean Artworks on Johnston Street: Haida Carver, Gaghinskuss /Clarence Mills, who will once again be taking up residence. For the past 22 years, he has used the carving shed (Ocean Artworks) off and on, to produce traditional Haida totems and masks. Clarence, whose traditional Haida name is Gaghinskuss, which means out of your own land, has been studying art since he was 18, and has pieces displayed in galleries in Canada, t...he United States, and all over Europe. Visitors to Granville Island are being given the opportunity to watch Clarence as he transforms raw pieces of wood into art using various carving tools. Currently, amidst a pile of woodchips, the beginnings of a totem can be seen as the first cuts are being made with a chainsaw. The wood he is working with is traditional west coast red cedar and yellow cedar from local forests. Clarence will be on-site until May 4th, generally carving Tuesdays to Sundays, weather permitting. Guests are welcome to take photos for personal use, and we ask that masks and social distancing regulations are observed when interacting with him. Please, no photography without permission from the artist. Professional photography and reproduction is not permitted.

Did you know that Granville Island has been a Coastal Jazz partner since the very beginning of our festival? We've been working with Granville Island for over 3...5 years now, and while much is different about our programming this year, we're grateful that our partnership has continued. This year's all-digital Winter Jazz will still take place in Performance Works so our audiences can stay connected to a great venue in one of the most beautiful parts of our city Thanks, Granville Island!
