Who knew that when we made that last post a few days ago that we would be calving this week already! There's always an early one, but thankfully it was a beautiful sunny day for this first time momma to have the first calf of the year. We're always relieved when these first timers calve easy and have great maternal instincts.
One of these is not like the other started doing more frequent herd checks again with calving season being just around the corner. We, and by We we are also speaking for the critters, all enjoy the sun a little more these days
Anybody else see the Sun Dog this morning? This sun halo is made visible by the ice crystals- the crystals act as prisms in which the light shines through. There are some perks to this cold weather I suppose photo credits to Susanne Gerber
Not a single one of them argued when we brought them back to the farm pasture from the bush. Calving season is just a few weeks away and we'd rather not search a rather large bush for calves on another note, we'll take back our mild winter weather anytime now #frozenwhiskers
Merry Christmas to you and yours! Winter is a great time to watch those brushpiles burn while sipping on a nice cup of hot chocolate
He tricked us all into doing firewood by telling us we're going to get our Christmas tree... I suppose it was a fair trade off
Coolest cat in the neighborhood, thanks to the girls poor Jack

Beautiful 4C out today with sunshine- guess it's now or never to give'er a good wash

She was a cold one to sort cattle today, but thankfully it went pretty smoothly. Now for a nice warm bowl of squash soup
"UGHHHH, more eggs? Why do they lay them so fast?!" Exclaimed one of the girls while she helped pick eggs for the second time today- had to laugh while explaining that chickens lay one egg a day and they don't all lay exactly at the same time. Not sure if it reassured her or discouraged her...
We should have done this a long time ago, but let us introduce ourselves so that you can now put a face to the name- we are Micha and Tina Gerber, and our spunky little farmer boy William. We are one of many Gerber families in the Rainy River District, each offering their own unique products. We mainly farm beef, laying hens, and are a grading station for eggs. We are young farmers learning to farm as we go and continue to improve what is already established. We are by no means experts in our field, but the dream is that we can both be full time farmers eventually to help feed the many mouths of Northwestern Ontario
Carpenters, please be nice. Perfectionists, don't look Here's my (Tina) attempt at a DIY bunny hutch from an old dresser our former neighbours graciously left behind (Thank you ). Unfortunately, Hubby had other more time sensitive matters to attend to (you know... harvesting, ploughing, prepping beef pastures for the winter, etc...). Maybe next project Swipe to see the before/ after!
You know your cows are spoiled when you've given them a new pasture to graze and they are still hollerin' at ya #beeffarming
Had a similar situation on Saturday, except it was an open gate it's a drop-whatever-you-are-doing-immediately type of panic that washes over you when you see one of your bulls run past the window
And just like that, it's October 1st
Not sure who's harder to pull away from a conversation... wives or farmers? But in all honesty, we love the opportunity to discuss with other farmers. There is always more to learn!
Visiting family in Eastern Ontario- as dairy farmers, mastitis is a regular occurrence for them. We see it in beef farming as well, but not as frequently. Mastitis is an inflammatory response to an infection that causes visibly abnormal milk. It often extends up into the udder which causes localized swelling, redness, heat, and pain. It can be treated with antibiotics as well as milking several times daily (unfortunately with it being painful, it's not as easy as it sounds!). In dairy farming, this milk is sadly wasted as it isn't safe for human consumption, but in beef farming the calves often can help treat the mastitis (acting as the "milkers") as it does not affect them!
It's always nice when the cows come running when we holler #grassisalwaysgreener
First sale of the Fall It's good to be back
Happy Saturday folks
Its all fun and games until you get to the front of the wagon and you realize you didn't stack high enough #hayingproblems
