The Flute. It's the only reed-less woodwind instrument, and by far the oldest. The flute as we generally know it today (and as Ian Anderson so beautifully demonstrates in the photo) is the transverse flute with an embouchure hole that the flutist blows air over. This species of flute (which is, in fact, one of many different species of flute) wasn't popularized until the 19th century - the earliest known flutes, however, are touted as being the oldest musical instruments in t...Continue reading

"Out of left field" is American slang meaning "unexpected", "odd" or "strange". The phrase came from baseball terminology, referring to a play in which the ball is thrown from the area covered by the left fielder to either home plate or first base, surprising the runner. -Wikipedia

Often when a song makes us prick up our ears, we’re unaware exactly why. And more often than not, it’s a percussion instrument. Corey Dahlen suggested this theme to me a while ago and I pondered on it (while numerous songs came into my head) - the percussion instrument, whether it subliminally or overtly pleases us, is always an integral part of the song. All of the songs that I’ve included in this playlist have one (or many!) distinctive percussion instruments that we may o...r may not be aware of, but now that you know that they’re there, you won’t be able to un-hear them. And that’s a good thing. Oh! And I got to play Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells, Part 1 in its entirety, and that is ALWAYS a good thing. 1. TUBULAR BELLS, Pt. 1; Mike Oldfield; Tubular Bells 2. QUARANTUNES. It's a word that's been used a lot this past year, and it's never been more relevant to me than it was today. Brett Balon, music director for Nutana Collegiate here in Saskatoon, created a wonderful collaborative original music project with his students - all while under quarantine, and in isolation - and we were lucky enough to have him in the studio this morning to talk about it! WOW!! It inspired me to start the program with an hour of new music (before the i...nterview), all which has been released during the pandemic. The following playlist beautifully illustrates the potential resilience and creativity of our species! Playlist for Green Eggs & Ham with Gillian Snider, Monday March 8, 2021 on CFCR 90.5 FM - Saskatoon Community Radio: QUARANTUNES 1. LOST AND FOUND (feat. THE LAST TRACK! I've been talking a lot about song placement on the last couple of Green Eggs & Ham shows, and I can't emphasize how much time goes into this. When an artist releases an album, it is released as a whole. From beginning to end. The placement of each song on any record is extremely important, whether the album is telling a story in its entirety, or it's merely a compilation of songs that the artist has been working on and cares about a good deal. Last week's sho...w focused on albums containing three songs that need to be played straight through with no interruption, this week's show is focussing on the last track. I still argue that all records need to be played from beginning to end with no interruption. This is becoming a thing of the past with so much music being downloaded and streamed - you don't have to buy an entire album to get the hit song that you want. This is a crying shame. There are so many records in my collection that I've practically worn out and it would never enter my mind to ever lift that needle until the record was over. So I got to thinking about the last track. The last track on any album plays a vital role - either as an addendum, a book-end, or the track that's going to be the last song resonating in the listener's ear. This week's playlist will include all the records that I played last week, and several albums that I've worn out: albums that I wouldn't dream of interrupting from the first track to the last. And it is the last track that I've shared with you. Playlist for Green Eggs & Ham with Gillian Snider, Monday January 4th, 2021 on CFCR 90.5 FM - Saskatoon Community Radio: THE LAST TRACK 1. THREE IN A ROW! This Monday's theme pays homage to those three songs on a record that have to be played consecutively with no interruption, whether they are a part of a suite or album theme, or just so beautifully placed on the record that they each blend into the other. I concede to the fact that, more often than not, albums need to be listened in their entirety with no interruption. However, I also find it interesting how some records just have that grouping of three that a...re inseparable. Thank-you to long time CFCR listener Corey Dahlen for suggesting this theme, and some of the music on this playlist! (Please don't hesitate, Good Listeners, anytime you have a theme idea - I'm more than happy to explore it!) OH!
