Finally, in thinking like a customer, we need to look at the consequences of choosing to work with you - or not. . We want to be heavy on success language and imagery in our marketing. Keep painting a picture of life on the other side of our product/service. Our imaginary OGMAC dinner delivery might talk about savouring connection around a delicious meal. It would paint a picture of time slowing down for an hour. We would be able to imagine a seven-year-old happily telling ...a story about the school day and parents who have the time and focus to be great listeners. . The failure: another hectic night, more missed connection, a dinner hour that left everyone unsatisfied on more than one level. . We talk about both success and failure because we need to remind the customer that something is at stake. There will be a gain or a loss based on their choice to accept or reject our offer. Use lots of success, with a peppering of caution against failure. Do you know what those two options look like for your customers? Think it through and weave it into your marketing. . When it comes to THINKING LIKE A CUSTOMER, this one is simple. 1) Know your primary Call To Action (What you want the customer to do.) Make it clear and direct - something that can be accepted or rejected. - Buy Now - Order Today... - Book Your Consultation - Shop Now OGMAC would have a nice big "ORDER DINNER" button in the top right corner of their website and repeated throughout. Do you have a nice, big CTA button on your website in the top right-hand corner? (Without a bunch of other menus/options/other buttons crapping up that prime real estate?) Thinking like a customer is the new black. So far in this little series, we’ve: 1. Created a clear picture of our ideal customer 2. Identified what they really (really) want 3. Figured out what problem is getting in their way and how you solve it... Now we need to think like a customer and ask, why should I trust you to solve my problem? What are we looking for in a helper? - Someone who understands us - Someone who has the skills/experience/wisdom to lead us to the other side. We’re looking for a guide. Our imaginary Ooey Gooey Mac & Cheese knows what it’s like for busy families trying to scrape together 45 minutes of peace. They also happen to have the perfect recipe for a meal everyone will love. Isn’t that exactly who we want in our corner at 5:15 on a Monday night? Yes, please. A couple of questions for you: Are you expressing empathy in your messaging? Are you letting your audience know (without overdoing it) that you are an expert in solving this particular problem? It can be a tricky balance because your message should be focused on your customer and not on you, but there is a place for establishing authority to build trust. If you’re coming across as a hero, you’ve tipped too far. Your customer is always the hero. Hey there! Are you THINKING LIKE A CUSTOMER yet? Now that you’ve identified WHO your ideal customer is and what they WANT, it’s time to talk about the most important consideration: What is our customer’s problem? Something is getting in the way of the thing they want - what is it?... Your product or service is the solution to that problem. Back to Ooey-Gooey for a minute (and yes, I’m still craving some gourmet Mac!) What I want is to enjoy that family dinner hour, but a few problems are getting in the way: Lack of time is a big one. Feeling overwhelmed by responsibilities is another. Add in a bit of pressure to give my family the dining experience we all deserve (complete with organic steamed broccoli, house-made au jus, and your choice of side.) Throw in a fussy eater, and you’ve got a nice mix of problems to keep you from a quality family dinner. So how do you pick one to focus on? Guess what - we, customers, buy solutions to the internal or feeling problems. So the f-word in this scenario might be: overwhelm, failure, frustration. The solution that the OG Mac (whoops, I just named my Macaroni & Cheese Co.) provides might be EASE, or PEACE or SIMPLICITY you get the idea. Determining your client’s problem and how you solve it is the 1-2 punch of marketing. Once you’ve figured it out, don’t stop talking about it. Incorporate problem/solution into all of your marketing. How I bet on myself, and on my clients. . All I wanted to do was help small businesses grow. When I started Greenhouse four years ago I cast a wide and shallow net of creative service. I built a nice little agency and came alongside a lot of amazing people. It was working very well. People would come to me for a logo or a website and they got a great solution to their problem. . The problem was, what they thought was the problem wasn't the problem.... . I read a book by Donald Miller, called "Building a StoryBrand." Don talks about how the power of story transforms the effectiveness of marketing. StoryBrand is a writing technique with endless practical applications. It's an effective tool to save time, money, and sanity. I gulped down the kool-aid and did my best to integrate StoryBrand principles into my writing for clients.
