Why go barefoot? I think a more interesting question is why don’t more people do it! Remember playing shoeless in the grass as a kid, or feeling the earth under your feet as you sat barefoot by a lake or around a campfire? For many of us, those carefree days of foot freedom are but a fond memory. However, there are many reasons why we may want to reconsider kicking off our shoes when we can:... Barefoot hiking is truly a way to feel the earth below you. The sensations from every part of the earth's surfaceleaves, rocks, soilwill leave you with a more full and dynamic hiking experience Walking barefoot on an uneven terrain helps to strength your foot muscles and improve your balance Contrary to beliefs that have been around since the inventions of shoes, you're actually better off barefoot when the trail is slippery, a little muddy or when you're negotiating uneven terrain like rocks and boulders. Your feet are simply more flexible, clingier and more tactile than your shoes. Without shoes, you're naturally producing a gentler gait and movement than you are with clunky hiking boots or even trail shoes. I used to experience chronic foot & ankle pain and even underwent surgery. If I can hike barefoot given my injury history, anyone can. I know it might seem strange/out of the ordinary, but my ask is for you is to kick off your shoes and begin spending more time barefoot on the grass as you spend time outdoors this summer. Tag me next time you’re frolicking barefoot #barefootgrounding #barefoothiking #healthyfeet #dirtyfeet #barefoothiker #thefootcollective #footnerd #foothealth #barefootjunkie #healthyfeetsolutions #healthyfeettips #healthyfeethealthylife #healthyfeethealthymind #healthyfeetalliance #healthyfeetmatter #happyfeet #barefoot #healthyfeetalliance

This is a visual to tie together the concepts I’ve been discussing over the last few posts. Zone of Apposition (ZOA): The cylindrical aspect of the diaphragm that apposes the inner aspect of the lower mediastinal (chest) wallconstitutes the zone of apposition..huh? In plain English : how pokey are your lower ribs?... The more pokey or flared, the less contact your diaphragm has with your lower ribcage. Why should I even carewell I’m glad you asked? Well, the diaphragm is our main breathing muscle AND also plays a major stabilizer role as it directly attaches to the lumbar spine. During exercise, we need to learn how to achieve a better cylinder or stack of our ribcage on top of our pelvis (optimal ZOA) for optimal loading. While not ill intentioned, many fitness instructions often cue their clients to keep their chest up and back straight Unfortunately, this tends to place us in the suboptimal ZOA position which biases our low back extensors and quads to overwork, while deleveraging our abs and hamstrings While long exhales help with the top part of the cylinder, we need to learn how to use our hamstrings NOT the glutes to tuck the pelvis STAYED TUNED #groundupphysio #fromthegroundup #ribcagemobility #backhealth #hiphealth #backpain #hippain #backpainrelief #healthylifestyle #spinehealth #lowerbackpain #neckpain #physiotherapy #backpainrelief #sciatica #healthworkshop #lowbackpaintreatments #lowbackpainrelief #stressmanagementstrategies #lowbackpain #hipmobilitydrills #hipmobilityandstrength #kneepain #posturalrestoration #posture #pri #correctexercise #humanmatrix #zaccupples #hamstringstrain #hamstringinjury

It might seem silly, but we’re going to blow up some balloons like the good old days Why you might ask? Balloons provide an external resistance that helps our ribcage come down into a better position as we’ve discussing in the two previous posts.... Devils in the Details Blow into the balloon aiming to narrow at your belly rather than forcing with the six pack muscles and pooching the belly out After you’ve completed your exhale, PAUSE and pinch the balloon with your fingers Breathe in super slowly through your nose NOT mouth Avoid letting your ribcage pop back You’d be surprised how many young clients of mine initially struggle to blow up a balloon because of the current extended resting position of their pelvis and ribcage Their low backs usually feel more relaxed after their brain clicks and they're able to accomplish the tasks. STOP and give this a try. Stress increases our breathing rate, but without proper exhalation, air can begin to accumulate.interesting Excessive air in the ribcage takes up space and can affect how we load our body If we cannot exhale, this air will likely prevent our ability to move in certain directions - particularly side bending and rotation ... Imagine holding a large exercise ball in front of you. Now try to bend forward. The air in the exercise ball blocks your ability to bend. A hyperinflated ribcage causes the same problem. ACTION: Lay on your back and attempt to SLOWLY exhale the air out of your mouth as if you were fogging the world’s largest mirror. Many people struggle to do this and rush through the process. The goal is to really empty your body of air and when you think you’re finished, exhale a little further. When re-inhaling, it is important not to sniff or allow the ribs to pop back upotherwise we are reverting back to our old pattern. Perform 2 sets fo 5 breaths or when you’re feeling stressed to help calm your nervous system. Give it a shot and let me know how it goes! #groundupphysio #fromthegroundup #ribcagemobility #backhealth #hiphealth #backpain #hippain #backpainrelief #healthylifestyle #spinehealth #lowerbackpain #mobility #neckpain #physiotherapy #backpainrelief #prehab #healthylifestyle #sciatica #healthworkshop #lowbackpaintreatments #lowbackpainrelief #stressmanagementstrategies #stressreduction #lowbackpain#hipmobility #hipmobilitydrills #hipmobilityandstrength #flexibility #mobilitytraining #hipmobilityclass #hipmobilityflows #hippain #kneepain

Deadbugs Deadbugs teach us to dissociate our hips while avoiding excessive extension of the low back But this is NO ordinary deadbug!... We are maintaining a nice stacked pelvis/ribcage relationship Keys Points : Hands on the wall and reach my elbows to the sky. This helps to drop my ribs. Long exhales which helps to further drop my ribs Avoiding extending the lower back as you lower your leg to the floor Reach the heel of the moving leg to train hip extension. 1Beginner: ISO holds, I drop both my knees as far as I can WITHOUT letting the pelvis change position 2Intermediate: Reach one leg out aiming to get heel in line with hip WITHOUT letting the pelvis change position 3Advanced: Long lever Deadbugs: I keep my heels away from my body the entire and alternate reaching legs WITHOUT letting the pelvis change position. Notice the theme. Give this a go and tag me if you give it a shot! What if I said I had a medicine that would keep you calm but alert That would relax and energize you? That would help you recover, boost your immune system, lower oxidative stress that causes aging, power you up and fuel every cell in your body from your frazzled brain to your taxed muscles You’d say give it to me, right... Changing your breathing truly does affectimmediatelythe body, mind, and soul. From a movement standpoint, our breath affects our spine, ribcage, hips, pelvis, feet.pretty much everything We breathe 22,000 times per day and unfortunately, many people breathe in a manner that’s less than ideal and are leaving a lot of potential on the table. Everyday clients report back to me newfound awareness and control of their stress and their pain from the breathing strategies I teach. Back straight knees, bent!!! OR maybe not? Can you spot the difference between these clips? Do you have knee pain or pack pain when you bend down? ... We need learn how to properly hinge and train your hip to extend BEFORE your knee! There’s absolutely nothing wrong with bending with a rounded back. In fact, by slouching and lengthening my entire back, I’m placing my back muscles in disadvantageous positionmeaning I am biasing my leg muscles to work while keeping my back out of the equation. During hinging activities, it is important that you do NOT let your knee snap back. HINT: all my clients struggle with this If you use your quad and allow the knee to travel backwards, your glutes don't have a chance to get involved and you end up overusing our low back muscles to get back up. If your knee rehab is focused around strengthening your VMO / doing lots of knee extensions, you're reinforcing a poor movement strategy. #groundupphysio #fromthegroundup #lowbackpainrelief #sciaticarelief #spinehealth #prehab #lowbackpainreliefnearme #lowbackpain #lowbackpainreliefexercises #mobility #physiotherapy #backpain #neckpainrelief #backpainsucks #backpainrelief #physicaltherapy #kneepainrelief #kneepainsucks #lowbackpain #injuryprevention #kneepainexercises #physicaltherapy #painrelief #kneepaintreatment

Part of a presentation I delivered to to a group of dedicated quarterbacks @theqbmovement Excuse the background! I had to leave the clinic to get home early from Montreal’s big snow storm ... All our arms do in gait is SPIRAL The movement in our arms feed into the rest of the body including our shoulders, blades, spine and hips. Consider for a moment an old wrist or elbow injury. Even if that injury doesn’t hurt today, it may well be a trigger for your current discomforts, pain and/or repeating injuries. For example, if we are unable to rotate our right wrist inwards, the ability of my torso to rotate to the left is compromised and can play out in a multitude of different compensations elsewhere in the body. Key : Don’t block the arm that is turning down. Give yourself permission to let the shoulder blade roll forward and upwards. This is a whole body movement - don’t stop the body from moving where it wants to go Keep your eyes level on the horizon #feelbetterin5 #anatomyinmotion #garywardsanatomyinmotion ##fbi5 #drchatterjee #feelbetterin5 #health #healthsnack #shoulderpain #shoulderpainexercises #physicaltherapy #groundupphysio #fromthegroundup #shoulderpainfree #shoulderpainexercises #neckpain #shoulderpainfree #physiotherapy #mobility #armspirals #quarterbacktraining #theqbmovement #quarterbackdrills

Happy New Year to all my Jewish peeps and Happy Weekend to the rest of my small following (for now!) At this time of the year, I think it’s an especially important time to reflect back on the previous months (in all its craziness) and set our sights on what is important in order to inspire our future actions. I think one aspect we can place our attention on is the relationship we have with our own bodies. ... Many people tend to have negative attitudes when it comes to their bodies, focused and frustrated on their aches, pains and limitations (rightfully so, pain sucks) However, my challenge to you is to break this thought loop and adopt a new mindset. Pain is information, it’s a call for change. When we get injured, it’s a time to step back, pause and evaluate the direction we are heading down. Our bodies are our vehicles and we only get one of them! Having pain and injuries is an opportunity to learn, be curious, to better understand our bodies and develop new relationship with our precious vehicles. If approached with a positive mindset - one that searches for the silver lining, we can exit the recovery process healthier and stronger. If you’re looking for a guide (the hard work is on YOU), I’m here to help you with a specific plan tailored for your body and goals. #fromthegroundup #groundupphysio #conormcgregor #motivation #sports #fitness #injuryprevention #rehabilitation #runningmotivation #rehab #injury #recovery #health #injuryrehab #pain #gym #strengthandconditioning #loveyourbody #fitnessmotivation #wellness #prehab #fitnessjourney #physiotherapist #physicaltherapy #inspirational #mindsetmatters #mindsetiseverything #shanatova

Inspired by @squat_university What’s your experience with dealing with doctors/physios/chiros who treat like this? I’m not here to call in to question the use of pain medication, or passive treatments ... but I am here to challenge the use of those as the ONLY treatment in dealing with an injury.... The medical system today is largely broken because we so heavily rely on what professionals do or give to those dealing with injuries. This creates a dependency on those treatments and doesn’t empower the injured person to take control and actively participate in the rehab process. Too many doctors ONLY prescribe pain meds & tell you to take time off. Too many physios & chiropractors rely on passive treatments , instead of taking a step back & treating the person in front of them and how they move! Now this is also a two way street because as humans, WE need to quit searching out the quick fix. Sometimes the right approach is a longer process. BUT with the right team in place & the right approach that does not rely ONLY on passive treatments, we can hope to find lasting results that keep you participating in whatever fitness aspirations you have for life. #groundup #groundupphysio #fromthegroundup #movementismedicine #montreal #physiotherapyclinic #healtheducation #injuryfree #sportsperformance #justmove #injuryrecovery #injuryrehab #sportsrehab #rootcause #painfreeliving #wholebodyhealth #longterm #empowerthrougheducation

Posted @withregram @dr.caleb.burgess Knees Passed Toes - TAG or SHARE this post with someone who needs to know this! - This may come as a surprise to some of you, but YOUR KNEES CAN PASS YOUR TOES when you squat, and this is perfectly okay and safe (and NORMAL)... - It's also okay when you lunge... - ...when you go down stairs - ...when you jump - ...when you bend down to pick something up - ...when you play sports - ...etc - And YES, sometimes keeping the knee further behind the toes with these movements can help to decrease pain in the area if the knee is sensitive to loading at the moment because doing this loads the knee less then allowing the knee to travel further forward - This does NOT mean that keeping the knees behind the toes is "GOOD" and letting the knees pass the toes is "BAD" - It's just changing HOW MUCH LOAD is applied to the knees during the movement! - Telling everybody that letting the knees pass the toes is "bad" just because it is painful in SOME individuals is similar to telling everybody that lifting 10 lb overhead is "bad" because it hurts for SOME people with painful shoulders - Or that walking is "bad" for you just because SOME individuals have pain in their feet when they walk - It's creating a false dichotomy of "good" vs "bad" where it doesn't exist! - In fact, many times after knee surgery (e.g. ACL Reconstruction), we actually want to promote MORE of the knees passing the toes during exercises if the person is avoiding loading the knee due to weakness or fear! - As always, WHY we choose a specific movement or exercise (and their modifications) depends on the specific situation! - So don't be afraid of letting your knees pass your toes when you squat, run, jump, kneel, etc...they're allowed to! - Questions? It Feels like I’m walking on a cloud Similar to our eyes which relay visual information about the environment around us, one of the primary roles the human foot is to act as our primary sensor for the physical environment we stand on. Each one of our feet has over 200,00 nerve endings, the same number as our hands!!! ... This number should give us clues. Just like our hands which give us important sensory information about the textures and surfaces we touch, our feet send our brain crucial information about the ground beneath us in order to guide optimal movement. They are our connection to the environment. Sensors are valuable so it makes sense to protect them. To protect your eyes from the sun you wear sunglasses - they let the visual information get through but protect our eyes from the sometimes-harmful rays of the sun. You don’t wear a blindfold. Our feet are important sensors, so it makes sense to protect them from scrapes and cuts by covering them. However, one of the biggest downsides of conventional footwear is the thick foam or cushioning which dampen the wealth of useful sensory feedback. * Decreased feedback from ground as to how hard we are interacting with itthe more cushion we wear, the harder we impact the floor * Decreased muscle activation to naturally buffer impact forces as we walk/run It seems the older we get, the more cushion we place between us and the ground. This doesn’t seem to make sense if you’re looking to remain active or feel more balanced and confident as you walk. By going barefoot or using minimal cushioning, you get way more feedback as to how you are interacting with the ground. The more you’ll be able to feel, the more you’ll be able to do! #groundup#groundupphysio#fromthegroundup#physiotherapist #barefoot #painfreefeet #healtheducation #injuryfree #barefootshoes #naturalfootwear #healthyfeet #wholebodyhealth#holistichealthcoach#holisticapproach#preventioniskey#preventionisbetterthancure #injuryprevention #montreal #feeltheground #earthing #strongfeet #sensoryprocessing

Palliative When most people hear the word palliative, what comes to mind is end of life care where the focus of treatment is to decrease the suffering of an individual’s final days. However, the exact Oxford definition of palliative is as follows: relieving pain without dealing with the cause of the condition. Unfortunately, this tends to be the nature of most of our healthcare system.... PROBLEM: PALLIATIVE AND REDUCTIONIST APPROACH TO HEALTHCARE We focus on Band-aid solutions and temporary measures to relieve symptoms without dealing with cause of condition. We wait until people get injured and manage their symptoms without ever addressing the root cause of why the issues continue to persist. We focus on isolated joints and body parts rather than global movement. We manage disease, but don’t teach health and it’s not sustainable. SOLUTION: EDUCATION & SYSTEMS APPROACH At From the Ground Up, our mission is to empower you to reclaim ownership of your health through optimal lifestyle choices. We take the time to educate our clients on how their bodies should move, design positive lifestyle habits and prevent injury by maintaining joint health and mobility. Rather than zoning on isolated joints and the area of pain, we take a global perspective and focus on restoring optimal movement in ALL joints of your body which may have been lost due to poor lifestyle habits and previous injury. #groundupphysio #fromthegroundup #healtheducation #healthpreneur #montreal #quebec #cotestluc #montrealwest #hampstead_qc #preventioniskey #preventionisbetterthancure #injuryprevention #injuryfree #injuryrecovery #injuryrehab #rootcause #painfree #painfreeliving #wholebodyhealth #holistichealthcoach #holisticapproach #mobilitytraining #painfreetraining #movementismedicine #healthylifestyle #thefootcollective #footnerd #palliative

Do you have tight calves? Knee pain? Back pain? The answer might be right underneath your feet. While you may not think you are wearing high heeled shoes, the vast majority of conventional running shoes are slightly higher at the heels than the toes. (You can even see this in shoe emoji )... A raised heel on a shoe, no matter how big or small, changes our centre of gravity forcing our whole body forward. As a result, we tend to bend our knees and arch our lower backs to compensate to keep ourselves upright. When the heel is raised, the calf is under constant tension so no matter how much stretching you do, they always remain stiff. Heels cause more wear and tear on the body and increase the risk of biomechanical dysfunction, leading to pain and injury. Plain and simple, human are not meant to walk on ramps Switch to natural footwear with a wide toe box and zero-drop (flat from heel to toe). Your body wants to function well. By changing the environment in which your foot operates, the rest of the body will start to move better and thank you for it. Normal vs. Natural Normaladjective. conforming to a standard; usual, typical, or expected. Naturaladjective. existing in or derived from nature; not made or caused by humankind.... At birth, the NATURAL foot shape is widest at the TIPS of the toes. This shape is maintained through adulthood in cultures who do not wear conventional footwear. While high heels and dress are an obvious example of a shoe that ends in an aggressive point, 99% of conventional runners (Asics, New Balance, Nike etc.) end in a tapered toe box at the very place our foot should be widest. When our feet are forced to fit the shape of normal footwear, they constrict our toes and lead to foot pain and foot issues (decreased balance, bunions, hammertoes, plantar fasciitis just to name a few). With NATURAL shoes that have wide enough toe box, your toes can move more freely to feel and connect to the ground leading to better balance and more robust feet. The first step to making change is awareness. PRESCRIPTION: Forget normal shoes and shoe-shaped feet! Look for NATURAL footwear that is widest at the tips of the toes to let your little piggies spread and look for opportunities to spend more time barefoot. WTF - WHAT THE FOOT?! If you know me personally, then you have definitely heard me rant to you about the importance of shoes and foot health! While it may appear funny, different, extreme or out of the norm to hear someone proclaim a foot fetish...I mean foot passion, I have always believed in a holistic, movement-based approach to health that starts from the ground up. ... Did you know that your feet contain a quarter of all the bones in your body!? With 33 joints, 26 bones, 4 layers of muscles, and 107 ligaments, the human foot is a fascinating biomechanical structure. Our feet act as our foundation and their proper function determines the health status of our knees, hips, backs, and even upper extremities. Unfortunately, most conventional athletic footwear with its narrow toe box, positive heel lift, thick cushioning, and supportive arches, compromise the natural shape and function of our feet causing them to become stiff and weak. As a result, we move on a poor foundation which often leads to injury elsewhere in the body. Your best defence against pain or injury is education. I couldn’t describe it any better, great post by @optimize.physiotherapy PHYSICAL THERAPY Breaking it down (what it should mean) ... PHYSICAL: The physical aspect to PT is essential. It’s the main reason why people initially go to see a therapist. Movement is a key element to this, as this is what the physical body and nervous system is designed to do. Treatment should therefore be physical in nature: It should be movement and mobility focused. It should be aimed at building physical confidence and competence. It should aim to improve physical strength and physical resilience though movement and loading (however that applies to the individual). It should focus on empowering individuals by building a stronger relationship and connection with their physical bodies. It should aim to improve physical capacity/physical freedom. It should be PHYSICAL. THERAPY: The therapy part of the term is also important. It includes the variety of things under the surface that may be contributing to the issue at hand. Therapy is about working through something with a trusted individual. It is about LISTENING. It is not about being ‘fixed’, it is about the client playing an active role in the recovery process by working through things together. It is about confronting fears, anxieties, or other obstacles getting in the way of recovery or wellbeing. It is about bringing unconscious or subconscious behaviours into conscious awareness. Things that may be contributing to the issue at hand. It is about responsibility and helping build the tools necessary to take back responsibility for health. It is about reframing things to help create a more positive mindset. It is about identifying unhelpful or false beliefs that may be feeding into the issue. It is about building self efficacy, mental resilience, and confidence. It is about helping someone create a new story, one that is more conducive to their growth and wellbeing. - #physicaltherapy #physiotherapy #therapy #body #mind #fitness #fit #gym #rehab #healing #wellness #wellbeing #healthy #behaviour #mentalhealth #lifestyle #movement #yoga #training #trainer #medicine #health See more

Oh, I’ve never had good balance! I hear this from people all the time who hold onto the common misconception that balance is not a skill that can be improved upon. Balancing is all about neurological problem solving. Your brain must make constant micro adjustments in order to figure out how to stack your bones in optimal alignment and determine the optimal amount of force to exert to keep you from falling.... Challenge: Find something narrow to walk on (2x4 piece of wood works great), play your favourite tunes and walk slowly back and forth while keeping your eyes on the horizon. No looking down! Include 5 minutes of balance work before your workout or making a cup of coffee. It’s a simple yet effective practice to train your body to be more resilient and to increase mental focus. Better balance trickles into all realms of movement to improve performance, prevent injury and to increase movement efficiency. #balancetraining #beamtribe #balancebeam #2x4 #play #simple #healthpreneur #groundup #groundupphysio #fromthegroundup #physiotherapist #physiotherapyclinic #healtheducation #injuryfree #injuryrecovery #injuryrehab #sportsrehab #rootcause #painfreeliving #wholebodyhealth #holistichealthcoach #holisticapproach #stability #barefoot #montreal @ From the Ground Up Physiotherapy

My story (quite a challenge to condense for an Instagram post!$ In 2013, I sustained an ankle injury that would forever change my life. What appeared to be a routine ankle sprain developed into a chronic problem that caused me foot, hip and back pain while performing basic tasks like standing and walking. For 3 years, I suffered from a constant buzzing discomfort that affected me physically and psychologically. ... Since then, I have spent thousands of hours learning from as many perspectives and therapeutic approaches, researching and experimenting which methods work and which don’t. Fortunately, I am now able to experience life pain free, play the sports I love unimpeded by fear and go for long hikes barefoot after not being able to stand barefoot for more than few seconds without pain. After suffering for so long, I am grateful for the lessons I have learned, and I look forward to sharing them. From the Ground Up From the beginning; starting with the basics, foundation Our philosophy at From the Ground Up Physio revolves around optimizing WHOLE body movement patterns starting at the foundation.... We place a big emphasis on getting people to master the basics: Can your feet pronate AND supinate? Can you breathe expanding your ribcage in all directions? How well can you control your pelvis and ribcage? These are the fundamentals when it comes to movement, pain & performance. If you have pain and these components have not been addressed, reach out to learn how we can help you solve your long-standing issues that others have struggled to help you with. #montrealphysiotherapy #quebec #cotestluc #montrealwest #hampstead_qc #healthpreneur #groundup #groundupphysio #fromthegroundup #physiotherapist #physiotherapeute #physiotherapyclinic #healtheducation #injuryfree #injuryrecovery #injuryrehab #sportsrehab #rootcause #painfreeliving #wholebodyhealth #holistichealthcoach #holisticapproach #breathingtechniques #pelvis #ribcage
