Versailles of Vaughan up for sale for $17.8 million: It’s the Versailles of Vaughan 24,000 square feet of opulent, over the top, European grandeur that’s for ...sale on the outskirts of the village of Kleinburg for $17.8 million. It’s a labour of love some might say obsessive passion that was built, quite simply, for a kiss. Its owners, two GTA entrepreneurs, had fallen in love with France’s Palace of Versailles during annual visits over the past eight years and wanted to bring some of that royal romance home for their own wedding. Actually, a lot, as it turns out. The listing boasts that you can entertain royalty and heads of state in what’s truly a work of art, featuring six bedrooms, 12 bathrooms, imported chandeliers, hand-painted ceilings and walls and an indoor pool fit for well, a king. The two-acre property on Rocmary Place, part of the exclusive and gated Vaughan Wood Estates the Bridle Path of Vaughan, says the home’s owner also boasts a sprawling piazza, ornate front gates and statues that hark back to 18th century grandeur. In an impressive nod to the 21st century, however, the monster mansion features the ultimate man cave a heated Ferrari room. That’s the boy toy room, says the owner, who asked not to be named, of her husband’s personal garage, one of seven indoor parking spots. I know this sounds corny, but we built the home to have our wedding kiss on the balcony. There was just one problem: It took so long to get each and every detail perfectly perfected, from the home’s gilded and grand staircases to each period-appropriate finish, that the planned nuptials had to be postponed a number of times. We were the decorators, we were the designers, we were the everything, says the owner. Our architect said he’s worked on so many projects where people didn’t carry things through to the end. We did, and we wanted paintings and views of the landscape from Versailles that inspired us. In the end, it took five years to bring the dream to life. The wedding went ahead just over a year ago, before a crowd of 100 family and friends, all dressed in 18th century Venetian garb. The couple had their long-awaited kiss on the balcony. A few months later, they put the house up for sale. I know it sounds corny, but it was all for the kiss, says the owner. If we sell, we sell. If we don’t, it doesn’t matter. We really do love it we spend a lot of time just walking around, looking at the artwork and enjoying the essence of the house. There have been about a dozen showings since the house, where the taxes run about $35,000 a year, went on the market. Most of the real interest has come from international buyers in China, the Middle East and Russia, says listing agent Michelle Schipper. Funny enough, Schipper has also had three or four calls of interest from a bunch of folks she didn’t anticipate: People asking if they can be married there. By: Susan Pigg
