Horrified? I first shared this about a year ago, with a few different statistics (obtained from Animal Welfare Victoria), and am still heartbroken by the data...... and how much needs to be done to meet even the basic needs of pet birds. Yet they aren't even on the agenda. Thankfully, some things are slowly changing as more people speak up. Since this post and other information I've shared, I've had so many people contact me sharing my concern and their own wishes for improved welfare and protection for birds. I've also met with government and animal welfare organisation representatives to discuss these concerns and see, not IF anything can be done, but WHAT we can do. Because in my mind, not doing anything, is not an option. In the time since sharing this, I have seen more of the same. The worst beak cases in Rainbow and Butter, with neither being seen by a vet. A number of traumatised, anxious or unwell budgies and weiros who, after speaking with their owners, have all been traced back to the same breeders/sellers. Countless finches and canaries in small or barren (or both) cages. Other birds found for sale online by myself and other rescues, who have been in dire need of vet attention for a long time, never having been seen by one. And so many unethical breeders with inadequate, unhealthy profit-driven set-ups. Birds are suffering. They deserve and NEED better. We can do this, we just need to work together to speak up for them and to stop those people and businesses who continue to act cruelly and unethically. What can we do as a start? Stop buying from pet shops and unethical breeders, and report any cruel or questionable practices or birds suffering that you see. For people in Australia, check your local RSPCA website to see how you can report. Victoria is currently reviewing their animal welfare act and seeking public submissions. Please see the link for more info: https://engage.vic.gov.au/new-animal-welfare-act-victoria (submissions close 14th December) It's going to take time, effort and determination... But we can make this happen. See more
