Meet one of our Winter 2021 Online Instructors! My name is Gid yahk’ii (Sean Young) a proud member of the Haida Nation. I am from the Gaag’yals iiGawaay, Raven clan of ’uuna Llnagaay (Skedans). Currently, I am the Manager/Curator of Collections and Lab of Archaeology at Saahlinda Naay Saving Things House (Haida Gwaii Museum) at Kay Llnagaay. I’m also an educated and trained field archaeologist and have been consulting on Haida Gwaii since 1997. I have been a instructo...r and guest lecturer for the Haida Gwaii Institute's Natural Resource Studies and Marine Conservation semester for the past three years. I’ve also worked for the Haida Gwaii Watchmen Program since 2004 as a cultural ambassador and caretaker living in ancient Haida villages, cultural sites and UNESCO world heritage site SGang Gwaay Llnagaay (Ninstints) for up to 3 months every summer which are located within Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve Haida Heritage Site. Sean's course (Ocean People, Culture, and Tradition) will be an in-depth study of Traditional Haida Culture from the ‘pre-contact’ era before 1774, to modern day 21st century Haida Culture. The focus of our learning will be on the relationship between the culture of the Haida people and their marine environment; and traditional and modern approaches to management of marine resources. Visit hginstitute.ca or email [email protected] for more information and to register.

October 22, 2020 HAIDA NATION UNCONDITIONALLY SUPPORTS MI’KMAW NATION The Council of the Haida Nation offers support to the Sipekne’katik First Nation of the ...Mi’kmaw Nation standing strong, as Mi’kmaq. We recognize and respect your sovereignty and self-governance. As an Island nation, we know the importance of healthy waters, communities, and economies and offer our solidarity from coast to coast to you exercising your inherent and treaty rights. The world is watching and sees the ongoing systematic racism from Wet’suwet’en country to Mi’kmaw territory. As a nation, we condemn all acts of violence against Indigenous peoples and ways of life. Police brutality, racism in the healthcare system, and dispossession from lands and resources call for renewed relationships and equitable systems. There is no reconciliation without respect for inherent Aboriginal rights and treaty rights. On behalf of the Haida Nation, I express unwavering support to the Mi’kmaw Nation. It is our right to fish in our territories as Indigenous peoples and it is our responsibility to stand together against injustices. We know your struggle and we know your strength. The Haida Nation unconditionally supports you in upholding your rights. -- Gaagwiis (Jason Alsop), President of the Haida Nation To view on our website, visit:
