Dave is a beat-up tom we rescued from the Valley in September. He ventured onto the scene where we were trapping a mama cat and babes; y'know, smelly food 'n all. In fact, we think he is the daddy cat, given the family resemblance. It quickly became clear to us that he is a gentle fella, as he didn't react overly much to the drop trap coming down atop him, and he migrated easily into the transfer cage from there with nary a hiss or growl. He was diagnosed with FIV, a 4/6 ...Continue reading

Halifax Cat Rescue Society 10.09.2020

Will you consider adding a donation to HCRS when you shop @canadacrafers.ca ?

Halifax Cat Rescue Society 03.09.2020

HCRS has been chosen as one of their Charity Guests! Check this out and please support the show and remember to round up your purchase. The folks at Canada Crafters are gearing up for Nova Scotia's very first, full-featured online craft show. This online 3-day shopping event starts on their website at www.CanadaCrafters.ca on Thursday October 15th at 6pm Atlantic time and runs continuously until 6pm Sunday October 18th. About the show:... Shoppers can purchase quality handmade items from talented makers just as they would in person - but without the need for masks and hand sanitizer! Shoppers local to Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, can elect to pick up their entire purchase at one time with our free contactless curbside pick up option. Those shopping from further away can have their order shipped to their door direct from the maker. Shop AND Help Local Rescues: We know it has been a difficult year for fundraising so we want to help our local rescues. That’s why we’ll be offering our shoppers the round up option during check out. Shoppers will have the opportunity to round up their purchase to the nearest dollar, or make a different dollar amount donation to one, or both of our charities, during the show. It's fast and easy to make a donation, and every penny counts! We are asking people to shop local, support handmade, buy from local makers and donate to one or both of our charity guests from October 15 - 18 online at CanadaCrafters.ca We are supporting both Halifax Cat Rescue Society and Fetch a Dog Rescue and Transport. We hope we can encourage people to at least "round up" but we also have the option for shoppers to select any amount they wish to add to their shopping cart. These are not shared donations, those making the donation will select which charity they wish to donate to. More than one donation can be made at a time, thereby allowing shoppers to donate to both charity guests if they wish. This link on our website promotes our charity guests and explains how the process works. https://canadacrafters.ca/our-charities/ You can find us on Instagram here https://www.instagram.com/canadacrafters/ And Facebook here https://www.facebook.com/canadacrafters

Ovie and Sid are settling in well at their new forever home, with Ovie leading the way. We were beyond thrilled to have a fantastic adopter apply to adopt the Trailer Park Boys within a week after advertising them for adoption. Remember, it's a challenge to find a worthy home for a black cat, never mind TWO black cats, and to boot two MIDDLE-AGE black cats, and to top it off two TIMID middle-age black cats. Just WOW! Our collective hearts are full.

In for a penny, in for a pound. This is the position we found ourselves in recently when one of fostered cats developed a urinary obstruction. Three weeks ago, Ollie had a blockage and his foster mom took it upon herself to spend the large sum of money to unblock him at her own vet clinic (God love 'er). Last weekend, she was deeply distressed to discover that he had blocked a second time. At this point, HCRS stepped in and took the situation in hand. We spent a tidy sum o...f money to unblock Ollie a second time at Metro Animal Emergency Clinic and hoped we were in the clear. But only 24 hours after his release from Emerg, Ollie blocked a third time. The conversation with the vet very quickly turned to either euthanasia or the possibility of a surgical intervention, a perineal urethrostomy or PU. This surgery essentially removes the tip of the urethra where it narrows in male cats, thereby preventing a blockage from happening again. Given that Ollie is only 2 years old, his chances of recovery and living a long, happy life are high. So we said, "PU please". Like any rescue group, we work hard to fundraise money to pay for our vet bills. And times have been especially tough during COVID. We don’t make the decision to spend whopping amounts of money any one cat lightly. But we don’t like to euthanize what is otherwise a perfectly healthy 2 year old cat with a fixable problem because the fix is expensive. In this instance, the situation escalated quickly where we were forced to make a decision whether the original significant investment was worth making another. So that brings us to where we are today. Ollie has had the surgery and finally things are looking up for this sweet boy. It is important to note that urinary blockages are often the result of struvite crystals. A good quality diet which features lots of water is something we highly recommend as a preventive measure. The expense of buying high end wet and dry food is going to be significantly less in the long run than unblocking a cat and/or performing a PU. It bears noting that most people cannot typically afford these expensive procedures, and euthanasia is their only recourse. Are you able to help us pay for his $3000 (discounted) vet bill? Fundraising has been difficult during these impossible COVID times and it is our only source of income. We can issue tax receipts for donations of $20 or more (being sure to include your mailing address in the message section of the etransfer). If you’re able to help, you can send an etransfer to [email protected] and please put in the message section For Ollie; there is no password required . HCRS, Ollie and his foster mom thank you!!

Some of you may remember PJ? The cat with the matted fur? Well we've got another update for you! And it will definitely make you smile. It's from PJ's Mom, Dad and sibs. "Thought you might like an update on the boys you rescued. Since Ossie moved in last fall (Ed. another rescue), he and PJ have been inseparable. They follow each other around and play together, mostly PJ doing the following. They are a team against the two little calicos who rule the house. Since spring,... about a year after moving in, PJ is a new man. His favourite treat is a good head rub, we can pick him up any time and he lets us cut off the fur mats he still gets. He is also the best of all the cats for coming when his name is called. Could be the food and treats ." "We credit Ossie for the great turn around with PJ. PJ watched for months as Ossie got hugs and sat on laps and he just decided that maybe it was not so bad after all. PJ is a gentle cat and his favourite activity is watching the other cats get into scraps. When he wants a head rub, he comes over and taps our hand. Ossie is still loving and yet timid. You should hear the two of them purr up a storm, no more hissing. " What a transformation!

Happy Black Cat Appreciation Day!

Halifax Cat Rescue Society 17.05.2020

It’s Black Cat Appreciation Day, which is our cue to advertise The Trailer Park Boys, Ovie and Sid, for adoption. These affable fellas are bonded brothers, now about 7 years of age, who were first spotted as kittens in a trailer park. A hockey-loving lady quickly made friends with them through the offer of food, and eventually reached out to HCRS to get them neutered. Because she already had cats at home, she was unable to adopt Ovie and Sid outright, but brought them in o...n cold winter days and kept them well fed. After a few years of this indoor/outdoor living, their caregiver had to move, leaving the boys in the care of another park resident. Last winter, first Sid then Ovie turned up with a nasty scrape on their head, which we attributed to a sharp surface in the hidey-hole where they took refuge from the cold. We resolved it was time to bring them indoors for good. Ovie adjusted more quickly and easily to indoor living, but Sid soon followed in kind, largely due to the influence of his bro. Ovie is super sweet and mellow, very much the lover boy. Sid is more timid in general, but so long as Ovie is along for the ride, he does very well. Both cats have tested negative for disease and they’ve also been treated for parasites. We’re now looking for that special home where black cats are treated with the reverence and respect they deserve. And these boys have done their time outdoors and are ready for retirement in a quiet, comfy home.

Handsome man! Mr. Gray said a fervent goodbye to his matted fur today and a happy hello to his new lion cut. This FIV-positive guy is doing so well in his fur-ever foster home. It's a big improvement from hustling a living in that big outdoors on the South Shore. We are so stoked to offer him a happily-ever-after.

Help celebrate this very special day with us by sharing a picture of you with your Feline Bestie(s) and one thing that you love about them...or more than one thing because let's face it cats are PAWsitively awesome!

Heineken has "swimmer syndrome". At 3 weeks of age, his sharp-eyed foster mom noticed the frog-like splaying of his back legs as he "swam" forward, which is the first and biggest clue that something is wrong. Heineken is the behemoth of his litter, the one that has weighed the most right from his birth. So when the other kittens in the litter were wobbling about in that beyond-cute way that kittens first become mobile, it was decidedly odd that Heineken wasn't at the forefront of the pack. The happy news is that the problem is easily remedied. Heineken was at the vet clinic this morning to have bandage splints applied to keep his back legs together. We'll be monitoring his progress closely, as you can imagine. Poor wee guy.
