What does yellow birch have to do with World War II? For decades, yellow birch was Ontario’s most valuable hardwood. During World War II, it was harvested heavi...ly for use in the DeHavilland Mosquito Bomber, a lightweight plane that was an effective foe of the German Luftwaffe. However, too many of the best trees were harvested, and Ontario’s yellow birch populations slumped. After the war, the Ontario Government’s new forest research unit went to work. Scientists determined which sites were best for planting yellow birch and how to help it grow and compete with maple. For example, it helps if yellow birch seed is not topped with a thick layer of maple leaves and if the forest canopy is opened to allow light in. Not sure how to tell a yellow birch from a white birch? If you tear a yellow birch leaf or break a twig, it smells like wintergreen! Want to know more? Customers ask me all the time what’s your favourite part about your job? Most assume it’s the crash a big tree makes when it hits the ground. But if you spend enough time working with trees you realize the most satisfying part is watching them grow. Big tall and heathy. There is a lot more that goes into the health of a tree then people realize. One of the most common issues we see with declining trees are lack of water and or poor soil conditions. ... Using the air spade allows us to air-irate the soil around the root system of the tree without damaging or harming the tree. Breaking up compacted soil and eliminating air voids. This also allows us to get some compost/ mulch/ and manure mixed In with the existing soil to creat a nutrient rich tree pit! These apple and cherry trees sure are going to thrive
