Hello Tooth Buds! As much as we love seeing you at our office, eating an apple is a great way to help your smile! If you have a sweet tooth, try substituting your treats for an apple instead! Apples have lots of nutrients and benefits that can help keep your child smiling! Did you know apples are known as "nature's toothbrush"? They're high in fibre and can stimulate your gums to help clean plaque from your teeth. Apples can also help produce saliva due to the extra ch...ewing needed, so your little ones can stay hydrated too! One of the best ways to make sure your child’s smile is happy and healthy is to have them complete biannual dental examinations! If you have any questions, or to book your child's next visit, please give us a call at (587) 576-KIDS (5437). Both new and existing patients are welcome! #HappyTrailsChildrensDentistry #calgarychildrensdentist #childrensdentist #pediatricdentist #calgarykids #yyckids #yycparents #yyccommunity #teethcare #yycnow #patientexperience #sugarfree #healthyliving #healthysnacks #apple #apples

Happy Tuesday, Tooth Buds! Our favourite pediatric dentist, Dr. Sam, is back with another episode of #TuesdayTinyToothTips! This week, we're talking about dental sealants! Now what exactly are dental sealants? Dental sealants are a protective coating placed on the surface of the molars to prevent tooth decay and cavities! Your child may feel invincible after getting sealants, but food can still get caught in those hard-to-reach places in-between their teeth! It's impor...tant to continue maintaining a good oral hygiene routine that includes flossing! Flossing on a daily basis can help prevent any unwanted cavities. Dr. Sam and our team would be happy to check if your child's eligible for sealants! Both new and existing patients are welcome to give us a call at (587) 576-KIDS (5437) with any questions, or to make an appointment. Leave a comment below to let us know what you want to hear on the next episode of #TuesdayTinyToothTips! #HappyTrailsChildrensDentistry #calgarychildrensdentist #childrensdentist #pediatricdentist #calgarykids #yyckids #yycparents #yyccommunity #teethcare #yycnow

Happy #TuesdayTinyToothTips to all our tooth buds! We hope you all had a wonderful holiday. Thanks for joining us for this episode! This week Dr. Sam is talking about bleeding gums in children. However, don’t be too worried if this happens to your child! Bleeding gums aren’t normally a cause for concern. When gums bleed, it's normally because of plaque build-up along the gumline. This causes the gums to become inflamed, resulting in bleeding when irritated. We r...ecommend the following tips to avoid this: Make sure your child brushes along their gum line. Floss should be used every night! By following the above tips for a week, you should see a reduction in the bleeding. If you do notice bleeding gums or something unusual in your child’s smile, it’s always best to come in for a visit! You can book your child’s dental appointment when you call (587) 576-KIDS (5437) Do you have a topic you’d like us to discuss for the next #TuesdayTinyToothTips? Many parents wonder why we check in on their little one’s height and weight when they come in for an appointment. We do this because we want to help you monitor your child’s overall well being and development! Did you know that pediatric dentists have a higher likelihood of seeing their patients on a regular basis than pediatricians? This is because we often start seeing patients when they are around one-year-old, and then biannual every year after their first appointmen...t! We also use height and weight for a variety of other reasons. Including when calculating safe dosages of local anesthesia. We’d love to check in with your child! It’s hard to believe that we’re already in December and 2021 is just one month away! With the new year approaching, we wanted to take the time to remind you to use up your dental insurance before it goes to waste! Most benefit plans won’t carry over leftover money into the following year, so now would be a great opportunity to book your little one in for a check up! It’s recommended that children see their dentist on a biannual basis. We want to work on preventing c...avities for your child as early as possible. Dr. Sam is back with another episode of #TuesdayTinyToothTips! This episode we’re talking about the importance of mouthwash! Fluoridated mouthwash is a great asset to any oral hygiene routine, especially if you have a little one who loves snacking! This is because anytime we snack on refined carbohydrates, it increases our chances of developing cavities. Mouthwash can help release any food particles that may be left over. We recommend adding mouthwash into your li...ttle one’s oral hygiene routine around the age of six, when they’re able to spit it out after rinsing. However, it’s important to remember that mouthwash doesn’t replace brushing or flossing! We’d be happy to check in on your little one’s smile and give you some pointers on their oral hygiene routine! We know it’s hard to have energy for anything when your little one is sick, but make sure their oral health doesn’t go neglected! Happy first day of autumn! Don't be like the leaves and let your childs oral needs fall behind! A new season can feel like a fresh start. If your family hasnt been consistent with their oral hygiene routine, nows the time to get things back on track! As stated by the Canadian Dental Association, theres 2 steps to remember when brushing your teeth. ... Step 1: Hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the teeth. Point the bristles to where the gums and teeth meet Step 2: Brush in gentle circles. Clean every surface of every tooth. For the front teeth, use the "toe" or front part of the brush. Just be careful, as you can hurt the gums by brushing too hard! Make sure your family repeats these steps at least two times a day for two minutes each time! Well be happy to give you and your little one pointers when you come in for your first appointment. Welcome to this week’s episode of #TuesdayTinyToothTips! Thank you for joining us. This week, Dr. Sam is talking about nursing and cavities. Oral hygiene is important from the moment your child is born. Nursing alone won’t cause cavities, however the minute you introduce solid food, cavities become a risk. Solid food promotes cavity-causing bacteria. So, parents are encouraged to use a damp washcloth to clean their little one’s teeth and gums after they eat or nurse.... Ideally, your child shouldn’t nurse after their nighttime oral hygiene routine, but if you do find yourself in this situation, just make sure to have your wet washcloth handy! Do you have questions about your child’s oral health? We are here to help! Brushing your teeth at least twice a day is very important as it can prevent tooth decay and gum disease. However, brushing your teeth is only effective if your toothbrush is in good condition! The Canadian Dental Association recommends that you switch out your toothbrush every 3 months. This is recommended because after 3 months, the bristle on your toothbrush will start to break down and not clean your teeth as well. Harmful bacteria can also be found on toothbrushes... if its not replaced consistently. For toothbrushes to stay in good condition, make sure to: -Always store it standing up -Dont press too hard when brushing -Soak it in mouthwash every so often to kill germs -Dont use a travel case to store your toothbrush We cant wait to help your little one with their oral health very soon! Welcome back to #TuesdayTinyToothTips with Dr. Sam! This week were talking about oral health care for newborns! Even if your baby doesnt have their first tooth yet, its still very important to keep a consistent oral hygiene routine. Even without teeth, newborns can still be at risk to develop cavities! New parents should be aware of baby bottle tooth decay. This type of tooth decay can occur when your babys teeth are exposed to liquids that contain sugar - including ...formula and milk. Tooth decay can also be transmitted through saliva. For example, when a parent who has an active cavity uses the same spoon as their child, they can pass on cavity causing bacteria. Parents can use a wet washcloth to wipe their childs tongue, cheeks and roof of their mouth to help them stay bacteria free!
