Across Canada, small businesses are stepping up to help our country beat COVID-19. By retooling to produce PPE, offering their expertise to others, and providin...g essential supplies to front-line workers, small businesses are showing their resilience, grit, and generosity reminding us that they’re truly at the heart of our communities. Today, I visited three small businesses in Ontario doing some of this incredible work: When COVID-19 hit, BCM Chemical in Cobourg, Ontario knew that they could help. They retooled their business to produce a gel hand sanitizer to help keep Canadians safe. Like thousands of other businesses in Canada, BCM Chemical’s supply chain relies on trade with our international partners. Canada is working with its partners in the WTO, APEC, and G20, and taking a leadership role in the Ottawa Group to keep supply chains open allowing our small businesses to access more opportunities and customers in the global marketplace. This crisis is not and should not be an excuse to stop trade, and we’ll continue to work hard to ensure that our trade relationships remain transparent, trusting, and strong so that Canadians can rebuild more quickly. I also visited AVIT Manufacturing, which stepped up to help build face shields for the local hospital providing 3D printing technology, design assistance, and networking. AVIT is also providing engineering support to firms who are retooling in response to COVID-19, sharing their expertise to help others weather this crisis. Finally, I visited Imprinted Apparel Store in Peterborough. When the pandemic began, Imprint Apparel added cloth face masks to its product offering, allowing customers to order prints or submit custom designs to be printed on their masks. We’re pleased to help support the growth of businesses like Imprinted Apparel, which is a beneficiary of the Women’s Entrepreneurship Strategy, and uses these investments to purchase and refurbish equipment, renovate the facility, and train staff. By producing cloth masks and proudly sharing that their products are made right here in Canada, Imprint Apparel is playing an important role in helping us all conquer COVID-19. These stories represent just a few of the thousands of businesses across Canada who’ve raised their hands to help local communities. Since the beginning of this crisis, we’ve been listening to small businesses, and are supporting them with measures like the wage subsidy, commercial rent assistance, $40,000 CEBA loan, and more. Now and throughout our restart, we’ll continue to listen and adapt as needed. To all our entrepreneurs and innovators thank you, and know that we’ll be with you every step of the way.
