*Pet Tip of the Week : Let’s Talk about Worms!* By Anne Woodbury, DVM There are many different kinds of internal parasites that can infect your dog or cat. Ani...mals who spend a lot of time outside are more at risk, especially if they partake in hunting wildlife like mice or birds, or if they consume another animal’s feces (yuck!). Overtime, a heavy worm burden can cause some serious health issues and can result in malnutrition, weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, gastrointestinal blockage, organ failure, and possibly death. This is why it is very important to consider regularly deworming your pet! As a vet, I hear this a lot: My pet does not need a dewormer because I don’t see any worms in their stool. This is not a good indicator AT ALL for determining if your pet has worms or not. Many of the adult worms that would actually be visible to the naked eye are clinging on for dear life to the inside lining of the intestines. They do shed eggs which will end up in the feces, and those are microscopic, so you would not be able to see them. If you do see live adult worms being passed in the feces (or being vomited up), then that means your pet likely has a heavy worm burden and should have a visit to the vet to make sure they are not in need of any further treatment. Any small animal vet clinic can sell you a dewormer that is safe for your dog or cat to take. Let’s have a look at some of the most common culprits that can infect your pets. Tapeworms They live in intestines and steal nutrients from the host animal. Their egg sacs look like grains of rice in the feces. The animal gets infected by eating feces, fleas, or rodents. If your cat or dog has fleas, please make sure you also get a dewormer that covers tapeworms!! Roundworms They live in intestines and steal nutrients from the host animal. The animal gets infected by eating the eggs in feces or grass. Mother dogs/cats can pass this parasite to puppies/kittens through their milk .. They CAN infect humans. Children who play outside in mud/dirt are at higher risk. Hookworms These worms bite the intestinal lining of the host animal and suck blood. The animal gets infected by eating the eggs in feces or grass. Mother dogs can pass this parasite to puppies through their milk. CAN infect humans. Whipworms Very similar to hookworm but does not usually infect humans. Giardia & Coccidia - These are microscopic parasites that will infect the intestinal tract of dogs and cats. Likely to cause diarrhea and are quite contagious. Pets with a weakened immune response like puppies and kittens are more at risk. Animals can get infected by ingesting the parasite cysts which can be in puddles, lakes, feces, mud, and grass. Heartworms A very nasty blood parasite! Adult heartworms can grow up to 8 inches long and settle within the heart are surrounding arteries. This disease can lead to heart failure if left untreated. It is spread by mosquitoes. Monthly prevention is very important when mosquitoes are active.

The main thing we are asking all customers to read every bit of signage before they enter the store and sanitize and follow all the proper procedures. I'm the only employee left working and we need to keep me healthy or the store will be forced to close.
