Western Taxidermy 28.04.2021

It was a real privilege to be trusted with a piece as special as a limited entry California Bighorn for a local resident. I am thrilled with how this mount turned out. I significantly modified the form to add the muscular stature that these sheep carry as most forms are very underbuilt.

Eurasian Wigeon have to be one of my favourite birds. They are becoming increasingly more and more common, in Ladner at least, which is really neat to see. They were almost unheard of when I started hunting 20 years ago and now I have friends who shoot 2 or 3 per season.

I know I've been slacking on the Facebook posts lately but I have been hard at work in the shop non the less. Here is a Barred owl recently put together for a local client. This is a great photo to illustrate the custom bases that come standard with every bird. I also get the permits for raptors for you so you don't have to deal with it!

Hello friends. PLEASE READ THIS!!!! This isn’t a typical post about taxidermy. There is a sweet young girl in BC with operable, curable cancer that our public health care won’t cover. She needs an operation in the states. The hunting community has rallied together to start a private Facebook auction group as a fund raiser. I can’t share the link on my Facebook page but it is called HUNTER AUCTION FOR HAILE. Many people have generously donated many wonderful items, services, fishing trips etc. I’m proud to have donated a voucher for bird mount with a full custom habitat and hardwood panel. If you have been thinking about getting a bird done, search up and join the group and place a bid. This little lady needs our help! Like and share with as many people as you can to spread the word!

Well everyone, it's big buck season! The rut is here and it's time to find a big, mature buck! This is an old buck on his way down (probably 6 + years old). Just before my client harvested this buck, it had a tangle with a cougar. There were fresh cuts all over the body from claws and teeth and a few on the face and muzzle. We agreed that it was best to tastefully replicate the cuts on the face as it was a significant part of this hunt's story. Please keep me in mind for some of the highest quality and detailed game head work available! Good luck to everyone out chasing big mule deer in the coming weeks!

Western Taxidermy is steadily becoming known to more and more hunters as the go to taxidermy studio for premium quality wildlife art. These two spruce grouse feature a custom made artificial bark panel, made in house. You will also notice the red eye combs have been rebuilt to a natural, fleshy appearance. It was super nice to finally make time to do a personal piece after getting caught up on customer work. I was lucky enough to harvest this beautiful antelope on a trip to Wyoming four years ago with my family. I decided to do this animal justice and made a pedestal to capture some more of the unique colouration and figure of a "speed goat". Coupled with some area correct sage and rock work with genuine Wyoming shale on a barn wood pedestal, all made in house.

Opening day of birds did not disappoint! I got to spend 3 hours in the field with my two favourite hunting partners. Every time I asked do you want to go this way or that, the reply was let’s take the hard way from my girls. So proud! And the two biggest roosters I’ve ever harvested to top it all off. I couldn’t be happier today!

This is a muley buck that recently went home to a client. This picture is a great way to see all of the extra details that go into a deer at Western Taxidermy that you won't find at most other shops. Well shaped eyes with soft, natural finishing around and a nictitating membrane in the corner of the eye. Deep nasal passages and inner nasal detail including an accurate septum. Rebuilt nostril texture and detailed coloration on the nose. A meticulously groomed cape and a tight brisket and accurate placement of the armpit skin. All of the details come together to create a premium quality piece to be enjoyed for years to come.

I hope everyone is off to a great start this hunting season or at least getting the itch like me. Here is a barn owl (road killed) recently completed for a local client. This photo really illustrates our custom bases that come with every bird mount.

Hunting season is already here for some and almost here for the rest of us!! I recently had the pleasure of completing this wolf rug for a local client. I was really pleased with the finished product. We are business as usual so please make sure to keep us in mind for your trophy needs this upcoming season. Good luck everyone!

I was absolutely privileged to be able to put this piece together for a life long friend. It was well beyond the scope and scale of anything I had done previously but I knew I was up for it and I'm immensely grateful for the trust to do so with an entire New Zealand hunt's worth of trophies in one display. Everything about this job was custom made in house. I would like to thank my friend Aaron Johnson for his carpentry expertise in building the beautiful lower hardwood trim ...board and for his help assembling the whole display on site. The habitat was built in a modular fashion in 4 pieces so we could physically get it into the trophy room. The cliff itself stands at nearly 10 feet tall. Don't be afraid to challenge Western Taxidermy with anything big or small. Our mission with every piece is to be the premier source for high quality taxidermy. See more

The sun is shining which means the bears will be waking up! It’s business as usual for us right now. For social distancing purposes we will simply facilitate any drop offs and paperwork outside rather than in the shop. For those still planning to venture out into the bear woods, keep us in mind for all of your trophy needs! We offer some of the finest rug work available and will be offering a great price of $995.00 on shoulder mounts with habitat like the one pictured in this... post. This is a great way to have a beautiful finished product for significantly less than the cost of a rug and only a couple hundred dollars more than simply dry tanning the whole bear hide. Although this is NOT my mount, I do have permission from my supplier to use their picture for advertising. I was going to do my own shoulder mount this spring but was unable to get the supplies in time before the border closed. In light of current economic times I will also be reducing the usual 50% I take for deposits to 35% to make your cost at drop off more affordable. Please feel free to contact me to discuss anything from pricing to skinning and field care. Good luck and have a safe and successful spring season! See more

Grouse really are a beautiful bird. They are a part of almost every big game hunt and, for many people, the first animal they ever harvested. They might not be the brightest bird but the underrated grouse brings back a lot of fond memories and makes a great mount.

Well folks, this is the last weekend of ducks coming up. It's the last chance this year to get them while they are at their finest! This snow goose went home this week with my friend of nearly 20 years Dennis Zentner. It's really neat that I'm able to put together a mount like this for someone who has seen my taxidermy progress from day one. I quite literally brought my first mount at 11 years old (a painfully terrible coot) to show to the junior rod and gun club that he ran for us kids with a few other volunteers on Westham Island.

This wood duck went home today. This is a great example of the type of extra habitat work that we can do beyond the rock and driftwood base that is standard with all of our bird mounts. Extra habitat is quoted based on complexity and cost of materials but is often much more economical than one might expect. Also take note of the rebuilt "eye rings" around the eyes. The eyelids lose their "fleshy" appearance once dried and we take the extra step of rebuilding them for a truly lifelike appearance.

A mature male Cooper’s Hawk on a custom made rock and limb base. A base like this is one of several options included in the price of all of our bird mounts!

This nice pintail went home last week. It might be a busy time of year but bird season will be over before you know it. Don't miss your chance this season to collect a specimen while the getting's good. For the finest bird work in BC, give me a call!

Western Taxidermy 22.07.2020

Another busy weekend in the shop (like every weekend lol). I just finished mounting this one. If you are a bird hunter who wants a bird done, look no further for the finest quality bird mounts available.

As promised in my last post, how 'bout that for a cool bird picture! This was such a fun piece to put together. Three snows whiffling and bucking a head wind over marsh scene on a 36" tall barn-wood pedestal. Everything made from scratch, in house. The northern birds are in and are starting to fully feather out. Now is the time to start really considering the birds you harvest for mounting as they are entering their prime. If you don't live close enough to drop birds off, they are super easy to ship!!! Good luck and happy hunting everyone!
