Do you consider yourself a DIY’er? I sure hell didn’t! I was always intimidated with power tools, wood materials and anything related to building things. But that all changed when I started my business. I had to overcome and face this uncomfortable, unknown area that I always pushed on to my dad when there are things that I needed built, fixed, you name it. I felt in order to succeed in my field, I needed to face my fear, get down and dirty and learn, STAT! This arch is... my first wood build DIY project. I had a couple who asked for a hexagon arch. And of course, I said hell yah! I can build that! Let me tell you it wasn’t easy but I was fully committed. Being a newbie, I had to do the obvious - RESEARCH & PLAN. I researched online on how to build it and calculated the dimension based on the height that I wanted (thank God I still remembered basic geometry). Then, I shopped for materials, did wood staining research and my most dreadful part, I learned how to cut the wood with a circular power saw (btw, I was scared sh!t to use this thing). As any building projects, there were hiccups. When I first put this together, it was very wobbly. I thought of every element that could possibly happen, the arch collapsing, falling forward or backward. Oh geez, I can’t have that happen at the wedding. So, reinforcement was key. With all that, I finished it and I couldn’t even be more proud of the result. I find this experience a resemblance on what we do in our daily lives. We try to escape from being in uncomfortable position. When we feel intimidated or afraid of something, we coward out before we even try, feeling extremely defeated. Never let fear stop you. Never let people intimidate you. Things may go array and that is ok. And if it does, life has it’s way of working out at the end. It really does. Don’t tap out so quickly, keep trying. As the province slowly lifts the stay-at-home order, I am hoping everyone still continues to be responsible and adhere to all protocols so we can eventually get back to our seeing families and friends and celebrating events. Update on the 50+ gathering restriction. If you have a wedding coming close, I would suggest you get in touch with your venue to find out whether they will continue to host events during this time. Also, be mindful you may have guest that may want to not attend due to the Covid-19 crisis. Contact all your vendors as well to find out if they are providing service at this time.
