Official Statement 161st Howick-Turnberry Fall Fair The Howick-Turnberry Fall Fair has become a focal point to life in Howick & Turnberry. It is a time for us t...o come together as a community to not only celebrate Agriculture, but also Rural Life. We began in 1859 as a celebration of the Harvest; of another successful year in the fields. It has allowed us to show off our prize vegetables or flowers, demonstrate our hand crafting skills, display the products of our home kitchens, or take pride in our best crops. For those not exhibiting their talents, it has provided an opportunity to come home. To re-connect with old friends and neighbours and catch up over a piece of pie. No summer was complete until the Howick-Turnberry Fall Fair had come and gone. The fair has changed in many ways over the past 160 years. This change has followed the growth of not only society, but our community. Today, we are living in unprecedented times. We must come together by staying apart. Although we would love nothing more than to host this anticipated annual reunion of friends and neighbours, it is with heavy hearts that we must cancel the 161st Howick-Turnberry Fall Fair. The Board of Directors knows that in order to ensure our friends and neighbours are able to join us again next year, we must celebrate this season from our homes. We want to ensure that our countless volunteers, exhibitors, and visitors are safe. Although this was a tough decision to make, we know that next years reunion will be even sweeter. Although 2020 will look different for our community, we look forward to a celebration of coming back together in 2021! Until then, Stay Safe my Friends, Neighbours, and Community. Sincerely, David Scherpenzeel President Howick Agricultural Society On Behalf of the 2020 Board of Directors See more

Quarantine Quick fact! Today we look at the history and primary functions of mechanical refrigeration The heart of our facilty is the refrigeration plant, this what removes the heat from the building enabling us to produce ice. ... So what is refrigeration? Refrigeration is the removal of heat from an area or substance in a controlled environment. Essentially the removal of heat to achieve temperatures below the ambient temperature. Modern Refrigeration can be attributed to many different inventors, although the first working prototype of these ideas is credited to Dr. John Gorrie. Gorrie created and patented the first system that would use the compression of gas and condensers to remove heat from an area. The invention was used to cool patients that were suffering from yellow fever. Gorrie's prototype is the basis of all refrigeration today. Arena refrigeration Although there are several types of cooling agents most arenas utilize Ammonia (NH3) as their primary refrigerant and Brine ( calcium chloride) as their secondary, this system type is call indirect expansion. Indirect expansion sends the brine to a closed loop system underneath the arena floor which removes the heat from the building. The brine is then cycled through pipes in the Ammonia Chiller to remove the heat from the brine. Ammonia has a very low boiling point so the heat that ammonia absorbs from the brine will inturn make the ammonia boil into a low temperature vapour. The vapour is then pulled into the compressor where it will be compressed into to a high temperature gas (240F). The high temperature gas will enter the condenser where water is sprayed over the pipes thus rapidly cooling the gas. The rapid cooling turns the heat into steam and this steam is released from the top of the condenser. The ammonia will now return back to the chiller as a low temperature liquid ready to cool the brine again. Main components Brine system located under the floor and pumped out to remove heat before turning to chiller. Chiller This is where the ammonia absorbs heat from the brine. Compressors Where the ammonia is compressed to a high temp gas Condenser Where the Ammonia is returned back to a cooling state. The heat from building leaves here as steam Check us out again for more quick facts

Quarantine Quick Fact! Let's look at the History of the ice resurfacer or as some call it the Zamboni. The first ice resurfacer was built in 1947 by Frank J. Zamboni. Zamboni owned and operated the Iceland skating rink in Paramount California. Frank found a need to create a machine that would increase revenues by shortening the time to perform ice maintenance. ... Built on the chassis of a surplus Jeep Willys, he would create his first Machine for testing. By 1949 he was ready to release a new and improved Model A for sale. The machine first garnered interest by being used by world class figure skater Sonja Henie during her cross country tour. The first Machine in the NHL was used by the Boston Bruins in 1954, this particular Machine #21 is on display at the hockey Hall of Fame. Over the years the company has used a few different types of power plants to operate the machines, from a Volkswagen Beetle motor, Hyundai 2L and GMC 3L Canadian Ice Resurfacer. In 1967 Andrew Schlupp from Elmira Ontario would come to create Canada's first manufactured ice resurfacer. The orginal machine was a tractor mounted unit while their first self propelled machine was later created in 1974. Today Resurfice Corporation located in Elmira and proud makers of the Olympia ice resurfacer are still a family run business. Olympia's are manufactured using GMC power plants( typically a 305ci V8) and drivetrains. In 2016 the company shifted from the GMC drivetrain to a hydrostatic drive to cut down on computerized components, although they would still utilizie GM engines. Olympia has been aggressive in developing Battery powered machines, In 1998 they developed the world's first NiCad battery powered machine and continue to improve on their technology. While there are a few more brands of Ice resurfacers worldwide, in Canada the two main competitors are Zamboni in Olympia. Checks us out again tomorrow for another quick fact.

In 1967 the facility needed a new roof and it was suggested that selling maple syrup could pay for the renovations which led to the creation of the maple syrup festival. By 1977 the arena would be deemed unsafe by the government and planning began to construct a new facility. The current facility opened in 1978 at a cost of $830,000 it houses an ice sheet, curling sheets, an auditorium and library. The facility is home to the Maple Syrup Festival, Belmore figure skating club and been home to multiple WOAA championship teams. The facility has always been operated by a deidcated group of volunteers from the community. Howick Community Centre Opened in 1974 this was a large endeavour for the Township as the facility cost roughly $415,000 to complete. A proud moment for the comminity, the facility was proof of hard work and good planning. The end result was a state of the art rink to service the community faithfully for many years to come. Over the years many improvements to the facility have been completed including the addition of 4 large dressing rooms, library and an elevator. Home of the Howick Hornets, Upper Maitland Mustangs, Saugeen Maitland Lighting and Howick Figure Skating Club the arena is filled with young aspiring athletes on a regular basis. The arena has been home to WOAA, OMHA Silver Stick and Povincial championships teams. Check us out again tomorrow for another quick fact.
