Insurance companies dont like fuse panels because you can put larger fuses than should be used which is a fire hazard. Your home insurance rates could be lowered when you tell the company youve changed your panel. Attached are some pictures of worn fuse panels and some before and after pics.... While your panel is being changed you can have your meter base upgraded. This is recommended if you have the old round meter base shown below. So proud to be apart of the Caledonia BIAs bottle drive with Craig Peters supporting the Caledonia food bank. Together we raised $3775! Thank you Caledonia for your support. We have decided to make this an annual event and will be collecting again next year just after Mothers day. Well done everyone. Clearly even the smallest donation added up because we exceeded what we thought we might collect for this cause.

Considering recent events HDI Electrical Services Ltd will be suspending services for the next week or so. This is for the safety of our customers and our own families. Do you still have a fuse panel? When is the last time you had it looked at by a qualified electrician? The most recently installed fuse panels are at least 50 years old. Joints and connection points come loose over time. Loose connections create arcing. Arcing creates heat and can lead to electrical fires. Worst case scenario. As the weather gets colder just a reminder that if you use electric space heaters to plug them directly into the wall outlets. Never use power bars or small extension cords. These are not made to handle the higher current that electric heaters pull. A power bar might be rated for 15amps but the internals arent made for all 10-15amps to come from one outlet on the bar. The picture below is from an electric heater being plugged into a power bar.

Was asked to look at a hair dryer after it "spit out a fireball" and burned this poor woman on her stomach. Burned through her shirt. When I looked at it I could see that the cord near the handle had worn and it dead shorted right against her body. Burning her shirt and leaving a small though nasty burn on her skin. Check your chords for wear! There should not be cracks in the rubber and you definitely shouldnt be able to see the copper inside. ... This hair dryer was just over a year old.

Was honoured today to be a part of the 6th annual Nolan Young Memorial golf tournament today at Cayuga Golf Course. Huge thank you to the companies that sponsored holes at the event and thanks to Craig Peters of the Caledonia Lions for helping me with the Birdie hole today. Five people birdied today and they all gave back their winnings. The birdie hole raised $783 on top of the donated money and sponsorships!... Looking forward to helping out again next year!.

DID YOU KNOW that fuses are just as safe as breakers when used properly? The reason some insurance companies want you to upgrade is because it is possible to put a larger fuse in place of the properly sized fuse. If that circuit is overloaded, it can cause the wire in the wall to heat up to the point of starting a fire. Because of this, any new electrical work done in your home requires you to have fuse reducing washers in the fuse holder. Shown in the pics below are the bl...ue 15amp and pink/red 20amp. You can see how the hole in the center is different sizes. These washers wont allow you to put a larger than necessary fuse in place for that circuit. Every now and then I come across something in my line of work that surprises or even scares me a bit. While at a service call today at a persons home I discovered an outlet that was, in my opinion, just days away from starting a fire. The home owner hadnt noticed the issue. A DIYer had connected a 15amp plug to a 30amp dryer plug. Then unfortunately had a power bar plugged into it with a space heater, on an extension cord!!!!, plugged into the power bar. These pics are the ...result. This holiday season remember these points: -never plug a heater into a power bar -dont run heaters on extension cords -dont run appliances on extension cords -lights should not flicker -plugs and switches should not crackle or buzz -nothing electrical should ever be warm except a heater and some dimmer switches. Today we reflect on the men and women who served and still serve to protect our freedom. We must not only remember the fallen but also keep in our thoughts those that still serve and those that survived their years of service.
