Now that the snow has melted, surely a lot of you are eager to get back outside to run! It's a great time of year for some fresh air and exercise, but after a long cold winter it can be easy to find yourself injured. 5 TIPS TO SPRING RUNNING GO EASY... Hitting the pavement is much firmer than a treadmill and your body has to work slightly harder to propel your body forward. Give yourself a week or two to adjust to the change in surface and always, always start each run with a full stretch. CLEAN OUT YOUR CLOSET Is it time to invest in a new pair of running shoes or a lightweight waterproof jacket? Make sure you have what you need to stay safe and dry as you build up your training. STAY SAFE Wear the right gear, including reflective items on dark or rainy runs, and always be cautious of slippery surfaces. SET GOALS Whether your training for a marathon or simply want to reach the 5km milestone, a great way to stay motivated is to pick a race that’s just a few months away. Make sure you’re realistic in what you choose and give yourself enough time to train properly. KNOW YOUR BODY If you know you have problem knees or weak ankles, commit to looking into the issue. A physiotherapist can help you determine the cause and create a routine that will help you improve. And that's where we come in! Many of us are probably attempting a comeback or a first experience at getting in better shape in the new year. Be careful! The risk of injury is very real, particularly when it comes to a return after a period of inactivity. COMMON INJURIES: Back pain Tendinitis and other inflammatory injuries... Pulled muscle Being forced to exercise outdoors, at a home gym, or virtually means you may not be able to practise the best techniques. QUICK TIPS: Always complete the cardiovascular aspects of your exercise program. Running, stationary bikes and elliptical trainer are great warm-up exercises for the whole body. Begin training with shorter sessions and increase gradually over time Warm up lifting very low loads, then increase the resistance. Do not work the same muscle groups two days in a row. A good frequency to start strength training is 3-4 times per week. Ensure you have a good lumbar and abdominal stability before embarking on weight exercises And as always, we're always hear to help if you need an adjustment! #FeelBetterMoveBetter

TOP 3 TIPS FOR WINTER RUNNING 1) Warm up: Muscle temperature is highly correlated with muscle performance. In order to raise your body temperature, warm up indoors by doing stairs, using a stationary bike or performing any aerobic exercise for 10 minutes before starting your run. 2) Layer-up: To help maintain your body temperature while you run, wear three layers for three different purposes:... A thermal compression base layer that is thin but form-fitting. A warm insulating middle layer. An outer windbreaker layer. 3) Schedule in your recovery time: A combination of heat, stretching, massage and foam rolling 24 hours after your run can minimize muscle damage and maintain flexibility. This is the most commonly ignored running habit and the most important in preventing injury make sure you make time to recover. #FeelBetterMoveBetter

We would like to welcome our two new Physiotherapy students! You may have already seen them around the clinic last week. Both Yvonne (left) and Evelyn (right) are McMaster Physiotherapy students and both of them are in their final clinical placements with us until October 2nd, 2020. Yvonne is from Markham and has lots of experience with basketball through coaching and developing programs for players. She has had past placements in Neuro, Musculoskeletal Disorders and Lon...g Term Care Homes. She is eager and enthusiastic to learn and refine her skills here with us! Aside from her studies, Yvonne is passionate about working with children and staying active. In her free time, Yvonne enjoys playing basketball, running, and spending time with her family. Yvonne will be at our Centennial location working alongside Heather and Laura. Evelyn lives in Orangeville and she has lots of experience as a strength coach and camp counsellor. Her past placements have involved Geriatrics and Respirology. She has 2 dogs, a cat, and is obsessed with plants. She's a bit of a foodie and always loves to hear anyone's restaurant recommendations. She's very excited to meet everyone and get to know everyone over these next few weeks! Evelyn will be working at both of our locations with both Kathy and Scott.
