Floating docks provide a unique biological habitat because, unlike pilings or other fixed structures, their surfaces rise and fall with the tide. They therefore provide a habitat very near the surface for benthic sub-tidal species that normally live only at much greater depths. EXPLORE UCLUELETLATER. Like you, we’re passionate about exploring, but now is not the time to travel.... We are asking visitors coming to the area to reconsider in light of the Provincial Health Office’s strong request to avoid non-essential travel at this time. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for helping keep us all safe and look forward to welcoming you back to Ucluelet when it’s safe to do so. Hello Nature 16.02.2021

One week ago today local free divers Andrew and Aline had the chance encounter of a lifetime when members from the T069A family decided to check them out. From ...Andrew McCurdy: Dive log Feb 11, 2021: Holy F. Aline and I had just left a sheltered cove and were both thinking anything could happen out here in the open pacific! Well. Anything did happen. As I looked along the shoreline I saw black fins racing towards us and shouted ORCAS!. Aline admittedly thought I’d lost my mind until she too saw the fins. We gave a half hearted kick towards shore knowing the orcas could easily outpace us, so we settled on huddling together while I pointed my camera and hoped they didn’t get too curious or playful with us. While orcas are highly intelligent and unlikely to mistake us for a meal, the fact remains that these are large, powerful predators in their environment. Holding our breath and huddled together we waited for them to burst into our vision underwater. We weren’t disappointed, they swam to about 10-15ft from us (this is taken with a 14mm lens on full frame) for a quick look before carrying on with what appeared to be a hunt. They left us buzzing with adrenaline, laughing semi-hysterically from excitement and relief. It took our hearts a long time to slow down after this. This experience, short as it was, truly left me breathless. Seeing these graceful, beautiful whales in their environment was humbling and I won’t forget it. A quick note, just to be clear: It is illegal to enter the water with or disturb marine mammals. We had no idea these orcas were in the area until we saw them approaching us. We in no way encouraged this visit, it was all on the terms of the orcas. Thank you to Andrew and Aline for sharing this incredible experience and for promoting responsible behaviour around marine mammals. Additional thanks to Jared Towers & Valérie Messier for their help with the identifications! Andrew McCurdy Lonely Spruce Photography

Hello Nature 26.10.2020

While Ucluelet continues to be low risk, to keep the west coast safe, we are kindly asking residents in the Fraser Health and Vancouver Coastal Health regions to adhere to recommendations from the Provincial Health Officer. The PHO has strongly encouraged avoiding all non-essential travel to and from home for the next two weeks. If you are scheduled to travel to Ucluelet from these health regions between now and Monday, November 23rd, please contact us to reschedule your trip... until it is safe to travel outside of your community.
