In the world of Health and Safety, the challenges are always evolving... "About the size of a kitchen stove, the four-wheeled robot navigates an unfinished building carrying laser scanners and a robotic arm fitted to a vertical platform. When placed in a room, the robot scans the unfinished walls using lidar, then gets to work smoothing the surface before applying a near perfect layer of drywall compound; sensors help it steer clear of human workers."

While having to impact on us directly in Canada, the article provides both an interesting look into OH&S south of the border, and how here in Ontario, we are doing far more to protect the health and safety of our workforce.

Given the current and seemingly unrelenting heat wave being experienced across Southern Ontario, it is imperative that employers understand the risks associated to heat stress and are ensuring they taking the necessary precautions for the protection of their workers. The following is a brief explanation of heat stress and the corresponding safety legislation. For additional information please see the links at the bottom. WHAT IS HEAT STRESS? Heat stress is a condition that ca...n take many forms, depending on the severity of external and internal factors and, of course, the condition of the individual. The heating and cooling balance in the body depends on: - air temperature - humidity - radiant heat - physical activity - colling (by the evaporation of sweat) - body adjustments (acclimatization Heat stress is an issue in many workplaces all year round. Heat stress not only affects employees working outdoors, but also those who are exposed to radiant heat or who come in direct physical contact with hot equipment as part of their job. WHAT THE LAW SAYS: Employers have a duty under Section 25(2)(h) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act to take every precaution reasonable in the circumstances for the protection of the worker. This includes developing policies and procedures to protect workers who have direct physical contact with hot equipment, are exposed to radiant heat sources, or are working in hot weather. For compliance purposes, the Ministry of Labour recommends the current threshold limit value for heat stress and heat strain (published by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists). These values are based on preventing unacclimatized workers' core temperatures from rising above 38C. https://www.wsps.ca/Information-Resources//Heat-Stress.aspx https://www.ontario.ca/page/managing-heat-stress-work

Every year, on April 28th, we remember those who have suffered a workplace injury, illness or death. Last year in Ontario, 190 people lost their lives as a result of a workplace accident or exposure - that's 190 too many. No one should ever have to worry about not coming home to their families, and loved ones, after a day's work. H.E.L.P. Safety Services is wholly committed to seeing that number reduced to 0 lives.... https://www.youtube.com/watch

The Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development has announced extensions for Working at Heights certifications set to expire in the coming months. The Ministry posted this notice on their announcement board yesterday (Mar. 30) in the evening. It reads as follows: The Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development is giving workers in the construction sector an extra year to renew their training if they work at heights. The mandatory training of more than 120,000 ...workers was due to expire over the next six months. However, many training providers have either cancelled classes or shut down due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The extension will apply to workers who successfully completed their working-at-heights training between February 28 and August 31, 2017. The validity period, normally three years, would have ended this year. It will now end in 2021. The extension will ensure affected workers can continue to work when possible. Construction will move ahead without interruption. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call us today!
