We extend our thanks to the men and women who serve in the Canadian military, to those who gave their lives in war, and to veterans past and present and their families. #remembranceday2020
Love this profile of writing phenom Haley Healey, who is blazing trails of her own with this captivating book about remarkable women who shaped Vancouver Island's history.
The cenotaph ceremonies will sadly be off limits to most of us this Remembrance Day. The good news is that these and many other memorial events will be streamed online throughout the day, for all to enjoy. We recommend this panel of literary readings, "Intergenerational Stories of War," November 11 at 2 pm.
We're pretty excited about this. Hope you can come.

The Autumn issue of BC BookWorld is out, and with it this review of STAGECOACH NORTH, Ken Mather's history of BC's most successful stagecoach line and its founder, BC business man and politician Francis Barnard. "Mather offers an accurate telling of this man and his efforts to establish the successful Barnard Stagecoach and Express Company (the BX), later called the British Columbia Express, heralded as the northernmost stagecoach line in North America over a 50-year span." Sage Birchwater, BC BookWorld (page 19). bcbooklook.com/latest-issue/
Our thanks to Jennifer Kimbley and BC Teachers' Federation (BCTF) Teacher Magazine for this sweet book review! Each story covers 4 to 10 pages, making it easy to fit into a lesson"
Surrey Art Gallery is celebrating its forty-fifth anniversary with "Where We Have Been" an exhibition of forty artworks from its permanent collection that reflect on themes of place, nature, memory, and identity in South of the Fraser. We are thrilled to note that two of our Heritage House author/artists - Sylvia Grace Borda and Sonny Assu - are among the amazing artists featured in this exhibtion. "Where We Have Been," which runs from September 19 to December 13, can be viewed as a pre-booked, self-guided exhibition tour. https://bit.ly/32ZqqtB
Anglers and West Coasters will delight in this amusing memoir in two volumes of life as a fishing guide in the early 1980s. After spending fifteen years guiding tourists on the hunt for tyee salmon, David Giblin decided that the offbeat people and places he’d encountered during that colourful period in his life had to be preserved. The result is a series of hilarious, strange, keenly observed, true (or mostly true) stories of Giblin’s experiences. Gilly the Ghillie, releasing... this month, follows the characters introduced in Giblin’s 2018 debut The Codfish Dream. This time around, the tight knit, all-male guiding community of Stuart Island is caught off guard by the arrival of Gilly, the highly competent first female fishing guide to work the Discovery Islands fishing grounds. Not surprisingly, chaos ensues. Gilly the Ghillie and The Codfish Dream can be purchased at your local bookstore or wherever books are sold. We love this tale of two women who launched successful publishing careers while in their sixties and who recently formed a connection based on a shared interest in historical fiction for kids and their relationship with Heritage House Publishing. MaryLou Driedger's book, Lost on the Prairie, will be published by Heritage House next spring.

Friends, the organizers of this year's Victoria Festival of Authors have produced an amazing program of literary readings, panels, and interviews with exceptional Canadian authors, all of it free and accessible via online channels (registration is required for some events). The official program begins September 30, but great content about the authors is being posted regularly on their site. Do give it a look and consider supporting this work by signing up for one of these wonderful events. Another great thing is that you don't need to be in Victoria to enjoy the show.

We're very excited about this upcoming middle-grade novel from our Wandering Fox kids' imprint. Set in the community of Wekweètì, Northwest Territories, the story tells of Julia, an eleven-year-old girl who has lived in the village since she was little. Although the community has always welcomed her, Julia still feels disconnected from the traditions and ancestral roots of the local culture. When she is invited on a canoe trip, Julia has no idea that the journey will change ...her life. Along the way, she faces her fears, learns to survive in the wilderness, and realizes the wisdom of traditional stories. Inspired by true events, this book will appeal to readers aged 9-12 for its relatable themes of family, friendship, growing up, and the struggle to connect with tradition and culture. JOURNAL OF A TRAVELLING GIRL, by Nadine Neema, with illustrations by Archie Beaverho, is available now for pre-order: https://amzn.to/3iyWERk
