This bracelet was likely a piece of ‘sweetheart jewelry,’ often sent by soldiers overseas to their loved ones at home. Imagine the love story behind it. Browse more local artifacts from the Surrey Heritage Collection at http://ow.ly/ycGe50El0vf. #VimyRidge
Did you know John Tenta aka Big John and Earthquake?
Bhana Singh is the earliest known South Asian settler in Surrey. Arriving in Surrey in 1906, at the age of 16, he worked on the Richardson Family Farm, just west of Cloverdale, for many years. Bhana Singh later worked in multiple mills in Surrey and retired at one in Port Kells, with his beloved dog. At the time of his death in 1966, he had lived in Surrey for 60 years. The Richardsons remembered him fondly, as a grandfather-type figure, and as an experienced driver in his 19...29 Pontiac. We are looking for photos, documents and more information about Bhana Singh. If you have anything to share with us about him, please let us know! The newspaper clipping was printed in The Surrey Leader on November 3, 1966. The photograph shows a group of South Asian men in Cloverdale ca. 1906. The photograph was published in K. Jane Watt’s Surrey: A City of Stories and is from the private collection of railway historian Barrie Sanford. #sikhheritagemonth #sikhheritage #sikhheritagemonthbc #sikhsincanada #southasianhistory

WWI veteran Zennosuke Inouye owned farmland at 128th and 96th Avenue, having been awarded the land for his service. In 1942, his land was seized by the Canadian government and the Inouye family was sent to internment camps.
