History Walks in Vancouver

A East End house with a lot of history... This house on the 600 block of Keefer is certainly one of my favourite stops on my East End History Walk. This seems to be the lone survivor of any East End house that once existed with a servants’ stairway connecting the upstairs and the kitchen. Built in 1902 by contractor William Cline for Ontario-born Ward 3 Foreman for the city of Vancouver John A. Clandenning. Home to three generations of the Bezzasso family, the house is named... Casa di Palmira in honour of the family matriarch Palmira Bezzasso who, besides being the beloved neighbourhood Nonna, was incarcerated for 6 months in Oakalla prison for bootlegging. This house is featured on my last History Walk of this limited February/March season which takes place on Saturday March 14th. This paranormal-focussed Walk is co-hosted by my ghost whispering pal, Kati Ackermann @westendkati . While I cover the history of what we pass by, Kati will share with us what she learns in conversation from the various East End ghosts that still haunt Strathcona’s streets. The East End street with three names: Dupont Princess, and East Pender Dupont’s name was always in the news... It was Chinatown, which meant Chinese, which meant opium and illegal gambling... and Chinese... but it was also known for its brothels so Vancouver’s first name changing by-law renamed Dupont east of Westminster (Main Street) Princess Street so that people living on that end of the street could disassociate themselves from the sun and vice of Chinatown. Later on, wh...en Pender was widened so that it properly connected with Dupont, Dupont and Princess Streets became East Pender. This street renaming procedure was repeated twice for the same reason elsewhere in the East End. Don’t miss my two remaining paranormally-themed History Walks on March 7th and March 14th. Strathcona, Vancouver’s East End, is not only this city’s oldest and most fascinating neighbourhood, it is probably its most haunted. It is a largely well preserved corner of old Vancouver rich in layers upon layers of immigrant history. The most affordable part of the city, Strathcona was the first Vancouver home for thousands of people fresh off the boat or the train arriving from all over the world. Over the decades certain blocks were claimed by Japanese, Italians, Scandi...navians, Chinese, Yugoslavs, Russians and Ukrainians, African Americans and even Newfoundlanders. Each group left their imprint. Each group left their stories. And each group left a few spirits behind that couldn’t, or didn’t want to leave. Some ghosts remain tied to their former houses. Ghost/History Walks Are Back! If you like old houses, neighbourhood history and a touch of paranormal, these tours are for you! I am co-hosting this walk through what I call the Working/Wild Side of Strathcona with my ghost whispering paranormal investigator friend Kati Ackermann @westendkati. At 10:00 we will depart from the intersection of Raymur and Malkin near the City Pound and begin our walk traversing Cottonwood Community Gardens and Strathcona Community Gardens which... was the site of a major Hobo camp during the Great Depression. From there we will skirt what was the shoreline of False Creek and tour Prior Street and then Union Street until Campbell Avenue where we will turn north then east and cross the Militant Mothers of Raymur bridge and see Kiwassa and Admiral Seymour school before heading south of Venables back into the industrial lands ending at 1000 Parker Street.
