Today marks the 103rd anniversary of the Halifax Explosion. On December 6, 1917, two ships collided in the Halifax harbour, one of which was a munitions ship loaded with explosives bound for the battlefields of the First World War. The north end of Halifax was wiped out by the explosion and subsequent tsunami. Nearly 2,000 people died, another 9,000 were injured and 25,000 were left without shelter. It was the largest man-made explosion to occur before the dropping of the atomic bombs in the Second World War. The survivors would live with the trauma, both physical and emotional, for the rest of their lives. Historica Canada (Children getting food from a relief station, December 1917. Courtesy Robert S. The Second World War ended 75 year ago this year, with one of the most important results being the birth of international justice. The Allies felt that justice needed to be served for the atrocities that took place throughout WW2. The Nuremberg trials replaced the practice of collective punishment with individual accountability, which is now a permanent part of our legal system. To learn more about the Nuremberg trials, watch Fight to the Finish on STACKTV.

In honour of tonight's season finale of #TheSecretofSkinwalkerRanch, we are looking at some of history's most controversial monsters. Which, if any, do you believe in? According to the Navajo-English Dictionary, the Skinwalker has been translated from the Navajo: yee naaldlooshii, which means "by means of it, it goes on all fours. The Navajo believe Skinwalkers were once benevolent medicine men, but chose to use their power to inflict pain. They are described as being most...ly animalistic, even when they are in human form. They are reportedly near-impossible to kill except with a bullet or knife dipped in white ash. The legend of Bigfoot began in 1958, when journalist Andrew Genzoli of the Humboldt Times highlighted a fun, if dubious, letter from a reader about loggers in northern California who’d discovered mysteriously large footprints. The letter fascinated readers. In response, Genzoli and fellow journalist Betty Allen published follow-up articles about the footprints, reporting the name loggers had given to the so-called creature who left the tracksBig Foot. The Loch Ness Monster is a mythical animal that allegedly lives in Loch Ness, a large freshwater lake near Inverness, Scotland. Although accounts of an aquatic beast living in the lake date back 1,500 years, all efforts to find any credible evidence of the animal have failed. The earliest written reference to a monster in Loch Ness is a 7th-century biography of Saint Columba. The werewolf is a mythological creature with the ability to shapeshift from human into wolf, either purposely or after being placed under a curse or affliction, with the transformation occurring on the night of a full moon. The legend of the werewolf was first documented in The Epic of Gilgamesh, the oldest known Western prose. The werewolf is a widespread concept in European folklore, stemming from Christian interpretations of underlying folklore developed during the medieval period. The Watergate scandal, which took place from 1972 to 1974, resulted in the resignation of Richard Nixon from the office of the President of the United States. He would become the first American President to resign, facing charges from the House Judiciary Committee for obstruction of justice, abuse of power, and contempt of Congress. The scandal began on June 17, 1972 with the break-in of the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Washington, D.C. Watergate Office B...uilding. Five perpetrators were arrested in connection to the break-in, and the U.S. Justice Department, as well as the press, connected the cash found on them at the time to the Nixon re-election campaign committee. The Nixon administration's continuous attempt to cover up its involvement in the break-in led to the U.S. Senate creating a special investigative committee. The subsequent Senate Watergate hearings were broadcast nationwide and grew public interest in the case. Following several incriminating discoveries during the hearing process, the House commenced an impeachment process against Nixon. He reluctantly handed over Oval Office tapes to investigators, which revealed that Nixon's administration was involved in the break-in and had conspired to cover up activities that took place after the fact. Given his involvement in the cover-up made public, and the House Judiciary Committee's approved articles of impeachment, Richard Nixon resigned from office on August 9, 1974. On September 8, 1974, Nixon's successor, Gerald Ford, officially pardoned him. #Watergate #Nixon

Today is Global Handwashing Day, a global advocacy day dedicated to raising awareness and understanding about the importance of handwashing. The link between handwashing and health was first made less than two centuries ago by Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis, a Hungarian doctor working at the Vienna General Hospital. He noticed that the women giving birth in the medical student/doctor-run maternity ward in the hospital were more prone to complications than those giving birth in the midw...ife-run maternity ward. Realizing that many of the doctors treated patients after performing autopsies, Semmelweis hypothesized that they got "cadaverous particles" on their hands before assisting with births, which led to the increased complications. As a result, he imposed a rule mandating handwashing with chlorine for doctors. This drastically reduced the amount of complications in the maternity ward. A few years later, another handwashing champion arose during the Crimean war. Florence Nightingale. She noticed that infection was killing as many soldiers as the battle itself, and began implementing handwashing and other hygiene practices as a means to reduce infection, to great success. #GlobalHandwashingDay is an opportunity for us all to be reminded of the need to maintain proper hand hygiene practices to stop the spread of illness and infection.

#OnThisDay in 1940, John Lennon was born in Liverpool, England. He would be 80 years old today. John's parents named him John Winston Lennon after his paternal grandfather John "Jack" Lennon and Prime Minister Winston Churchill. His mother taught him to play the banjo, the piano accordion and bought him his first guitar when he was 16. At the age of 19, he co-founded The Beatles, the most commercially successful band in the history of popular music. He became known for weari...ng his trademark round glasses, which he started wearing full time in the 1967 movie "How I Won The War," in which he was an actor. While he gained worldwide fame as the founder, co-lead vocalist, and rhythm guitarist of the Beatles, John Lennon was also well known as a peace activist. He famously held the two week-long anti-war demonstration Bed-Ins for Peace in 1969 and, after moving to New York City in 1971, Lennon's criticism of the Vietnam War resulted in a three-year attempt by the Nixon administration for his deportation. Many of his songs were adopted as anthems by the anti-war movement and the larger counterculture, and are still relevant to this day. Here is the #history of #JohnLennon
