Atlantic Canada Studies course offered this coming Winter 2021!

Congratulations to Dr. Kehoe and Dr. Vance! Edinburgh University Press has just launched a new series on the Histories of the Scottish Atlantic. The first book in the series was edited by two Saint Mary’s professors: Dr. S. Karly Kehoe, Canada Research Chair in Atlantic Canada Communities; and Dr. Michael E. Vance, Chair of the History department. The book is called Reappraisals of British Colonisation in Atlantic Canada, 1700-1930. Its contents are grouped in three section...s: Dispossession and Settlement; Religion and Identity; and Reappraising Memory. The collection provides fresh perspectives on the legacy of British colonization, focusing on the Atlantic provinces as the region was crucial to Britain’s imperial ambitions during the timeframe covered. Researchers from Canada, Scotland and the United States shed light on groups who have tended to be excluded from Britain’s imperial narrative, highlighting the Indigenous experience, Scots, and the presence and agency of slaves, free people of colour and religious minorities.
