It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh. As we salute a life of dedicated service, our thoughts are... with Queen Elizabeth II and the members of the Royal Family at this difficult time. Motivated by a sense of duty to others, Prince Philip supported a large number of organizations and promoted community engagement. He also had a strong connection to the Navy, having joined the Royal Navy in 1939. He served aboard several ships throughout the Second World War, including HMS WALLACE as it supported the Allied landings in Sicily and HMS WHELP, which was present in Tokyo Bay when Japan surrendered. In Canada, he later held several honorary positions, including Admiral of the Royal Canadian Navy and of the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets. Fair winds and following seas, Sir, and thank you for your decades of service.

Meet our Deck Chief, Chief Petty Officer Second Class Kevin William Nadeau! In his career, he has been a part of: ~Militia, 4th Battalion the Royal Canadian Regiment; ~CFS Shelburne;... ~CFB Greenwood; ~HMCS Athabaskan; ~Instructor Canadian Forces Naval Operations School; ~Canadian Command; ~NCSM Ville De Quebec; ~HMCS St. John’s; ~HMCS Toronto; ~Senior Sonar Op Instructor Naval Fleet School Atlantic; ~HMCS Montreal; and ~HMCS Scotian. He spent his time at sea detecting and tracking submarines, drug interdiction, to search and rescue! He finished off his Regular Force as the East Coast Chief Sonar Operator and then transferred to our family, at HMCS Scotian! When he was asked what his favorite memory was, he wasn’t able to just give one! He said he loved the opportunities to see a glacier up close, seeing dolphins jump 20ft in the air, walking through a rain forest, seeing a polar bear in the wild, visiting the great North, crossing the Arctic circle, and meeting new friends! When he is not crossing the Arctic or walking through rain forests, he enjoys hiking, biking, and watching movies with his spouse Selena and his four kids! #WeTheNavy #RCN

Meet Sailor First Class Jennifer Hayes! S1 Hayes is a Boatswain and a vital leader in our Deck Department. She grew up in Windsor, Ontario, and started her Naval Career at HMCS Hunter / NCSM Hunter in 1991. She released but joined back in 2004 until 2016, and then was a member of HMCS Star / NCSM Star from 2016 to 2017! She moved to Halifax to accommodate her husband’s occupation as a Pastor and joined HMCS Scotian. When S1 Hayes finished her initial Boatswain training, she ...decided she needed to focus on her family and started to work both part and full time as our Coxswain writer, Deck Supervisor, and our Small Arms custodian! Now that they’re grown up, she plans on returning to her courses to become a fully qualified boatswain and work towards her promotion! When she is not focusing on her work, she enjoys spending time with her family, serving at her local church, listening to music, and drinking tea and coffee! Thank you, S1 Hayes, for all you do in and outside the unit #shethenavy Rencontrez S1 Jennifer Hayes!

Today marks the 103rd anniversary of the Halifax Explosion. On 06 December 1917, SS Mont-Blanc, a french cargo ship collided with SS Imo in the Halifax Harbour, creating the largest human explosion at the time. This explosion demolished buildings, shattered windows, snapped trees and nearly destroyed everything in its wake. We remember all those who had were killed by the explosion and all those who were injured.

HMCS Scotian / NCSM Scotian 24.11.2020

The RCN and the Halifax Explosion. The RCN was there. On the morning of December 6, 1917, #HMCSNiobe was docked in harbour. After spotting a fire on Mont Blanc,... HMCS Niobe’s Acting Boatswain Albert Charles Mattison volunteered to jump into the ship’s pinnace (a small steamboat), leading a team of six other volunteers. They first attempted to tow the burning ship, which had been abandoned by its crew, away from populated areas. When that effort failed, they tried to fight the fire. Despite their best efforts, Mont Blanc exploded and the seven men were killed instantly. For their heroism, Acting Boatswain Mattison and Stoker Petty Officer Ernest Edmund Beard were posthumously awarded the Albert Medal for Gallantry in Lifesaving at Sea. They were named and recognized in Parliament, along with the other five men: Leading Seaman Charles McMillan Ordinary Seaman Freeman Burnley Nickerson Able Seaman Albert Saunders Wireless Telegraph Operator George Veals Stoker George Roley Yates In addition to the seven who perished trying to prevent the disaster, 14 other Canadian Navy personnel died as a result of the explosion. And just as the loss of life was felt throughout the city, more than 30 family members of Canadian Navy sailors were killed. https://www.canada.ca//histo/heroes-halifax-explosion.html Maritime Forces Atlantic - Forces Maritimes de l'Atlantique Naval Museum of Halifax - Musée naval d'Halifax Canadian Forces Base Halifax - Base des Forces canadiennes de Halifax Canadian Armed Forces Canada Remembers

November is #TransgenderAwarenessMonth. This month, and every month, we strive to create an inclusive work environment that is free from harassment and discrimi...nation. At the same time, we need to recognize our history in not always being open or supportive of those #DefenceTeam members who identify as transgender. We continue to learn from our past, and take steps towards better supporting our transgender members, but we know there is more work to be done in achieving a truly inclusive workplace. As Defence Team members, we all have a responsibility to respect the dignity of all people, whether at home or abroad. If you'd like to learn more about how together we can foster a safe and inclusive work environment for everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression, please check out our Positive Space initiative: https://ml-fd.caf-fac.ca/en/2018/06/15212 #TransgenderAwareness #DiversityMatters #InclusionMatters #StrongerTogether
