Gull update! All seven oiled gulls that were admitted a couple of weeks ago after being found coated in an oily substance have been bathed and regained their waterproofing! Four out of the seven gulls have moved outside into a larger enclosure while the other three remain inside, still recovering from some injuries that they arrived with, but can hopefully join the rest later this week. Bathing and helping these gulls get their waterproofing back has been a process but it’s... all worth it to see them outside enjoying the sunshine and pools that they can splash in! www.hoperaffle.ca

This Red Fox arrived earlier this week with mange. Thankfully the mange is not as severe as most cases that we see where their eyes are crusted over and there is no fur left on their tail. That means that this guy will have a shorter stay here with us and be able to get back home as soon as the fur grows back. He is currently undergoing mange treatments in the ICU, but once more fur has grown back he will be moved to an outdoor enclosure until ready for release. www.hoperaffle.ca

The eight Sullivan’s pond geese were returned back to their summer home today at Sullivan’s Pond in Dartmouth! It’s always sad to see them go but always very nice to see them so excited to be back on the pond and have their first swim in the water for the season! www.hoperaffle.ca

The Snowy Owl that we posted about a couple days ago has now been released back into the wild! This Snowy arrived after being found weak and trapped behind some fencing unable to get out. She was brought in by one of our volunteers and spent several days resting and being rehydrated. Once stronger she moved out to the flight cage and was then soon ready to be released!

This common grackle arrived a couple of weeks ago with spinal trauma from an unknown cause. After several weeks of cage rest and pain medications, he is well on his way to recovery! He has now upgraded to the next level in his rehabilitation and is in one of our aviary units where he has more space to fly and strengthen his muscles. We are hopeful that he can be returned back home soon!

Some patients require a long rehabilitation. This Turkey Vulture has been with us since December of 2019! He arrived after being found trapped under a large, deceased grey seal. He was rescued by two kind gentleman, Robert and Jeff and was then transported a few hours to Hope for Wildlife. Throughout his time with us he recovered from an elbow injury that he sustained from the seal that required weeks of physiotherapy as well as needing to regrow feathers because many had b...roken off or become oiled from the seal. It was a happy day for our team the other day when we finally got to release this beautiful guy back into the wild! After getting his bearings he took to the skies and was seen joining up with a couple other Turkey Vultures in the area, a very happy ending for this long term case! A huge thank you to everyone who has been involved with this Vultures care throughout all stages of his rescue, rehabilitation, and release!

‘Tis the season for mangey porcupines! Yesterday one of our volunteers, as well as two caring passerby’s noticed a porcupine in a park that was missing some fur and seemed too small to be on its own. After discussing with the medical team it was determined that the porcupine should come in as it appeared to have some mange. The rescue commenced that lasted quite a while as the porcupine decided to make the job harder by climbing 40ft up a tree (pictured in second image)! After some time in silence the porcupine decided to come back down the tree and the rescuers were able to safely collect the little one. He is now recovering in our ICU from the mange and should make a full recovery in the next several weeks as his fur grows back. Thank you to everyone involved in this rescue!

This little bobcat arrived last month after being found extremely skinny and too young to be alone. He had an infection in his mouth that caused most of his baby teeth to rot. He was started on antibiotics and within a couple of weeks the infection cleared. He will remain with us for the winter and be released when food sources are plentiful in late spring.

This beautiful Snowy Owl arrived after presumably being hit by a car. The owl is recovery from some minor wounds on both of its wings but it’s spirits are good and we are hopeful for a full recovery! Did you know that the Snowy Owls thick feathers used for insulation from the Arctic cold make Snowy Owls North America’s heaviest owl, typically weighing about 4 pounds!

This Pine Grosbeak arrived last week after being found stunned underneath a window. It is recovering from mild head trauma and an injured coracoid but we are hopeful for a full recovery!

Last week was Sullivan the skunks 2nd anniversary at Hope for Wildlife! He arrived in the fall of 2018 after being found in a storm drain. He had an infection in his mouth, alopecia on his tail, was very lethargic along with several other injuries. Through it all Sullivan was a very friendly guy and didn't mind being picked up for medications and never tried to spray the medical team as he underwent different treatments. In 2019 it was decided that Sullivan was not suitable for release and based on the behaviour he had shown to the team we decided to see if he wanted to stay with us and become an education ambassador. He thrived in his new position and now can be seen at Hope for Wildlife on Saturdays and Sundays from 12-3pm, teaching everyone about the beauty of skunks! Happy 2nd anniversary Sullivan!!

The little Northern Saw-whet owl that we posted about the other week made a quick recovery and she was released back home the other day! She didn’t stick around long, but she did stop in a nearby tree to look back before taking off deep into the forest. Another successful release back into the wild!

Hope For Wildlife 16.10.2020

This little Downy Woodpecker arrived several weeks ago after flying into a window. He spent many weeks recovering from a fractured coracoid but it healed well and after spending some time in an outdoor aviary rebuilding his muscles, he was ready for release!

Education ambassador Chippy has been busy reorganizing his pantry in time for visitors! His daily meals are provided to him in a dish and then he takes them out, sorts them, and puts them neatly in his nestbox for later! Just a reminder that we’re open today from 12-3pm! Come by and check out the Hope for Wildlife 2021 calendar, Christmas swags and Christmas trees along with many other gift ideas. We hope to see you there!

We have received several calls this year regarding animals with their heads stuck in jars. Thankfully our team of wonderful volunteers have been able to respond to these calls and safely remove the jars, give a quick exam and if all is well, release them again. Please make sure to properly stow away anything that an animal may be able to get into! Or cut any objects that may become stuck around their necks. If you come across an animal entangled in garbage please contact your local wildlife rehabilitation centre for assistance!

This Grey Catbird was recently admitted after flying into a window. It has sustained some head trauma but is recovering well. We hope to get him back to where he belongs in the next couple of days! Fun fact: The Gray Catbird’s long song may last for up to 10 minutes!

On Friday we celebrated Zach’s birthday with a beautiful Peregrine Falcon release! This Peregrine arrived a couple of months ago with a broken wing after being shot. He made a complete recovery from his injuries and then spent several weeks in an outdoor enclosure practicing and perfecting his flight once again. As you can see from the video, he was very excited to be back in the wild and didn’t stick around long!

Hope For Wildlife 19.07.2020

It's that time of year when we receive many calls on mangey porcupines! We currently have several in care, all with different stages of mange. Mange is caused by a small mite that burrows into the skin and lays eggs which then spread and cause itchiness and hair loss. This porcupine just has a couple more crusts to shed and then needs to grow back some fur on its belly before being released back into the wild. But in the meantime, he certainly enjoys his snacks!

Our friends at Cobequid Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre shared some great information on what to do if you find a seabird on land. This is especially important in these next couple days as Nova Scotia awaits the impending hurricane Teddy! It is very common for seabirds to be blown ashore during these high winds and if you come across one, please call your local wildlife rehabilitation centre for advice. Stay safe everyone!

We received several flying squirrel babies at the beginning of the summer, both Northern and Southern! They were all recently soft released back into the wild. Nest boxes were installed on trees for them to give them a safe, sheltered area while they explore their new surroundings and find their own nesting spots!

#TransformationTuesday Yesterday we shared a couple pictures from the recent fox release but who remembers the fox pup named Rain, who arrived at Hope for Wildlife in the spring? She has spent several months at Hope for Wildlife, but she was also recently released back into the wild! Below is a compilation of her growth at Hope for Wildlife as she transformed from a pup, just a month old, to an adult. The last photo is her enjoying her freedom by jumping right into the lake and going for a swim!

Hope For Wildlife 19.06.2020

This is the time of year where all of the summers babies are ready to be released back into the wild. They have gone from being cared for around the clock by our team to being moved to a larger outdoor enclosure where they learn valuable skills that they need to thrive in the wild. It's always so amazing to watch how strong their natural instincts are! It was recently the fox pups turn to be released in the wild after months of rehabilitation! Some of the pups arrived with mange, others emaciated and several orphaned or rejected by their parents. Now they are all back to where they belong!

Hope For Wildlife 14.06.2020

All 35 of this years baby skunks have grown up and have been successfully released back into the wild! They didn't stick around long after the carrier door was open but just long enough for one of our volunteers to capture these very sweet photos!
