Dear Horse industry, Stop being awful. Stop putting others down for the sake of one's own prosperity. ... Stop the whispers in the warm up ring. Stop the snarky remarks behind closed doors. Stop with the clicks and underhanded complements. Stop with the need for newest and latest fashions or tack sets but never riding your horse in fear they may get dirty. Stop manipulating others words or actions. Stop normalizing poor sportsmanship and start normalizing folks who work hard. Chances are if you've had horses long enough you've encountered some sort of this. From the competition world, to trail riders, to rescues, to top level riders, it's everywhere and it's terrible and it's got to stop. It's got to. I've met riders, young and old, who are petrified to ride infront of people because some where along the line, someone told them they weren't good enough. I've seen talented people quit because of gossip and I've seen people give up on what they believe in because folks made them belive they were only 1' tall. When you see a rider kicking them selves after a bad ride, tell them great job for hanging in there and give them some tips. When you see that girl show up in the rusty old bumperpull, know she likely put everything she had into her entry fees. When you see an organization fighting for what they believe in, fight with them. When you see the girl too shy to ride, ask her to help you out by hopping on to keep your horse company because it would be an awfully big help. When you see the girl scared to death in line up remind them why they are there and they have this. When you see the girl discouraged over progress, remind them how far they have come. The world is full of ugliness, horses should be our escape, not a place we feel belittled. We are all incredibly blessed to have Equines in our life. Becoming better Horseman is hard enough without having folks tear you down. Please start normalizing raising each other up. -Erin O'Neill

Today I wanted to finish off the hoof trim i did a couple weeks ago. PSA no I dont recommend to do your own horses hoofs it can damage your horse If you do something wrong! Well that didnt turn out.. the neighbors was shooting cap guns and flash was spooking. I did calm her down enough to clean out her hooves. And finn lunged her for the first time. It was amazing and proud momma moment for my son and my horse. I'm so happy she is cautions around my son. Her demeanor chang...ed and she didn't want to move but we got her to walk around us to lunge her. I'm over the moon. Horses have taught me that things dont always play out and being flexible to work on something else works. I guess I need to work on bomb proofing with her this spring again. We did a little bit of that today and she did great!

Sometimes your horse will surprise you how amazing they are around kids. My son has been around my horse since he was a baby, I was very cautious in the beginning. But it became our norm when I was taking care of my horse. Its awesome too see the progression they both are making and learning from each other.

Shes such a inspiring business woman and equestrian. Her story is amazing, she recovered from a broken neck and came back as the world champion against the odds and now advocates for helmets when riding. It's not mandatory after 16 years old, however I've cracked helmets falling off horses. So I dont ride without one anymore. https://www.facebook.com/374963042584534/posts/3079255942155217/?substory_index=0&sfnsn=mo

This mare was a rescue I could never walk up in the field to touch her... four years later we did it! I learned from her that time and not having a plan will help you get to your goals sometimes. Sometimes it's just standing and being part of the herd that helps you bond differently

Hope everyone is doing well and staying safe! As much as I would love to be self isolating, I am still working part time in Warman at Buy-Low Foods. What's impacted the horse coaching and business side of things? -> Under the Sask Horse Federation it was highly recommended to post phone all clinic's and gatherings. Esp if liability insurance doesn't cover illness and viruses. ... -> Many equine services has cancelled appointments because of people in their lives who are at high risk. -> Most Equine Learning Programs are also cancelled. however some barns have decided to continue like normal and ask that if you feel sick to not show up. As well adhere to the sanitation that's recommended. Yay! I'm grateful I have my horse on the same acreage. I decided, because I am one of the people still going to work. That I wont be hosting equine first aid classes nor coaching at this time. *will keep updates on business and horsey things! Have a great day

This mare presented to Conley and Koontz Equine Hospital early Monday morning with a several hour history of violent colic, and required emergency surgery. She... was found to have a 720 degree twist of a section of mesentery (the tissue that hangs the small intestine from the top of the abdomen). A tight twist such as this stops the normal bloodflow to and from the intestine, and results in the discoloration you can see in this picture: the purple loops are devitalized (dead) intestine, and the pink loops are normal. Treatment for this condition involves cutting out the compromised tissue and connecting the healthy ends together. Unfortunately, this mare had too much involved tissue (over 75% of the small intestine) and was euthanized. See more

Animal welfare expert discusses bits and breathing in horses Dr. David Mellor, a leading animal welfare expert, looks at how bit use can impact equine breathing during exercise and what this means for equine welfare. ... Thumbnail for Animal welfare expert discusses bits and breathing in horses By: The _news_article_author field is not defined as a custom field. | February 19, 2020 Bits and breathing. Both words start with the letter b, and most might assume their relationship ends there. But Dr. David Mellor, a leading animal welfare expert at Massey University in New Zealand, believes there is more to the story, especially when it comes to our horses. His research, shared in a talk at the University of Guelph in autumn 2017, looks at how bit use can impact equine breathing during exercise and what this means for equine welfare. One of the first topics that Mellor covered during his talk was bit-induced pain (pain that comes from bit use). Mellor introduced the topic by asking audience members to take a pen, press it lengthwise against their teeth, increase the pressure, and consider the amount of pain this caused. He then asked audience members to repeat the steps, with the pen pressed against their lower gums instead. Audience members agreed that this location produced more pain. Try this experiment for yourself. Mellor compared the sensation felt on the lower gums to the sensation felt by your horse when a bit is in their mouth. He explained that the sensation can range from mild agitation to severe pain, depending on factors like bit type and rein use. Mellor then extended this topic to links between bit use and breathing in horses. He explained that many horses will open their mouths to deal with bit-induced pain. Unfortunately, when a horse opens his mouth, especially during intense exercise, it becomes harder for them to breathe. This is because horses breathe only with their noses, and not their mouths. In fact, a horse’s mouth actually needs to be closed for optimal breathing. When the mouth is closed, there is a negative pressure that the horse creates and maintains through swallowing. This pressure keeps the soft palate from blocking the nasopharynx." - horse.com

Some say young horses don’t need routine dentistry examinations and treatment - well, take a look at this image of a 2 year old and decide for yourself! We don...’t know the precise cause and this is most unusual, and not necessarily only due to sharp enamel points of the cheek teeth but one thing is for sure, it is a good job the owners started their horses dental checks at this age and didn’t leave them! (This is an unridden horse and the local vets are investigating pasture contaminants and other possibilities - other adult horses in the paddock unaffected) Thanks to Dr Kivara Luke for sending me the image See more

An exciting thing happened a couple weeks ago. I had the awesome opportunity to work with Laurie Somma and write about how I over came anxiety... with a different approach. Horses! One of the reasons why im determined to stick with the horse industry after 16+ years is how my horse has helped me manage my anxiety and depression from being on meds to coping without. This is what I wrote as a GUEST BLOGGER! https://lauriesomma.com/can-horses-help-anxiety/
