No time like the present for a telephone campaign to show our members we care! We've launched our COVID-19 MEMBERSHIP CARES campaign to check in on our members well-being, offer support and comfort, and show that Hoy Ping cares. Many are in good spirits and have family supports, which is a blessing. Next phone call you receive may be in Hoy Ping dialect!! Talk soon :)
UPDATE: The Hoy Ping office has been observing temporary closure since Thursday, next week's board meeting and Ching Ming cemetery visit are cancelled, and the building is locked down of all tenants as of today. Phone calls to directors list shows everyone has been staying home and observing social isolation. All are very compliant but also scared as seniors with lower immune systems and no vaccine available. Phone calls have been averaging 10 minutes each, with some director...s surprisingly chatty! Reassuring to confirm they have family supports in place, and to offer additional ones. If you know of an isolated senior (Hoy Ping or otherwise; Chinese or non), we'd be happy to add them to our phone bank for daily check-ins on their needs and mental health. Just message with their info :) Be safe!
With the cancellation of our Spring Banquet that was to be held at Floata Seafood Restaurant , please consider attending #IWillEatWithYou dinner there this FRI MAR13 to help make up for their lost business. Given that the majority of Hoy Ping members are seniors with lower immune systems, the banquet cancellation was made as a necessary precaution. Looking at you young folk to step up!!

Directors will gather privately to observe the traditions. Here’s a photo from the Chinatown Spring Festival Parade to keep you going.

Just pre-ordered a copy of this book for Hoy Ping Benevolent Association! Pre-order by NOVEMBER 17 (this Sunday) for a hefty publisher's discount. Portrait photographer, Yucho Chow of Yucho Chow Studio, was a prominent member of Hoy Ping BA as a business and community leader. His photograph taken of Dr. Sun Yat-sen in Vancouver Chinatown in 1911 is one of the most iconic and well-reognized and -used photos of the revolutionary leader. It makes up one of 344 pages of the limited edition book.
Hint: It’s in Hoy Ping! And it’s beautiful!!! (Kaiping = Hoy Ping in Mandarin)
Happy Mid-Autumn Festival from our Hoy Ping family to yours
RESTORATION IN PROGRESS of Chinese pavilion at Mountain View Cemetery (Vancouver), as led by Chinese Benevolent Association of Vancouver among the local Chinatown and Chinese Canadian communities. Renewal will presumably be completed in time to conduct Chingming rites next Spring. Can't wait to celebrate the completion of this community effort honouring our ancestors!
Pleased to report that Hoy Ping Benevolent Association in Vancouver has donated $2000 towards community efforts to restore and maintain the Chinese altar at Mountain View Cemetery (Vancouver). The altar is used by Chinatown's Chinese societies to perform the annual Chingming and Chongyang festival rites in honour of the ancestors and early overseas immigrants. Fundraising campaign c/o Chinese Benevolent Association. Oh yea, we also just paid $24,500 in property taxes representing half of the year's taxes on our properties at 434-440 Main Street.
Calling on all Hoy Ping youth aged 15 to 25! This free summer camp with MP Jenny Kwan is a great opportunity for political leadership development under this Hoy Ping treasure.
SMALL HOY PING WORLD!!! Vancouver Hoy Ping director June Chow meeting Victoria Hoy Ping past-president Paul Chow who went to grade school (in Hoy Ping) with Vancouver Hoy Ping past-president Tony Chow . Photo taken in hall of Victoria CCBA (Consolidated Chinese Benevolent Assn).
This article in The Tyee uses the correct term of Hoy Ping (not Kaiping!) and includes the 1927 composite photo of Hoy Ping directors recognized for their fundraising efforts for a new school back home. Exhibit ends May 30, with scanning weekend May 25/26. Add your Yucho Chow photo to the archive and/or book. How to identify a Yucho Chow photo at www.yuchochow.ca
What you can’t hear is the communist music accompaniment, but behold our new President for 2019-2021, Mr. Peter Woo! Celebrating his appointment at his 70th birthday (Hello, Mrs. Woo). Apparently, he started serving on the board of directors in 1992, which deserves a medal .
Conservation work being done in Cangdong Village (a village with surname Tse/Xie ) in Hoy Ping not just to preserve architecture, but also the beliefs and lifestyles of residents. "After all, we didn’t want to just preserve the village’s stunning architecture; we wanted to preserve its history and environment, its way of life, and the very spirit of the place." Professor Selia Tan is also Hoy Ping, and has visited our Vancouver clubhouse a number of times :)
Yucho Chow, Vancouver’s first Chinese photographer, was of Hoy Ping (Kaiping) heritage! He paid a $100 head tax to come to Canada, working as a houseboy before apprenticing as a photographer. Do you have any Yucho Chow photos in your family albums? How to identify at www.yuchochow.ca
Yucho Chow was a prominent and distinguished member of Hoy Ping Benevolent Association. Come see the important work he did as Chinatown's first photographer in documenting the early life and settlers of our city.
Yucho Chow was of Hoy Ping heritage and from the same village as us!! A prominent business person, he was an important member of the Hoy Ping Benevolent Assn in Chinatown. Look for a composite photo in the exhibit that he designed and hand painted featuring Hoy Ping directors and their fundraising efforts for a school back home in Hoy Ping in the 1920s.
New to the scene: joss paper served layered salad style!!
