My family is from the Netherlands; one of the first countries occupied by Nazi Germany and one of the last country liberated. I remember going to Holland the first time when I was 13 with my Oma. When people learned I was from Canada they would hug and thank me. Random strangers in stores, on the tram, and in restaurants would hug and thank me. It was an incredulous experience. I could not, and still cannot, imagine the horrors the Dutch people lived through which led them t...o hug and thank a 13-year-old child 37 years after the end of the war. Today I remember the veterans who bravely fought to free my family and an enslaved people. Today I also give thanks to all the families of those soldiers for their sacrifices.
