Since October, Health Sciences North (HSN) has been ramping up surgical activity to 105% of historical volumes to reduce the surgical waitlist that grew during the first wave of the pandemic. In light of the COVID-19 outbreak declared Saturday night on hallways J and K of the 6th floor of the South Tower of the Ramsey Lake Health Centre, HSN needs to slow down the surgical ramp-up effort as a precautionary measure. As a result, HSN is postponing all 55 non-urgent elective sur...geries that had been scheduled for the week of February 8th to February 14th and that required an inpatient overnight stay. This will bring HSN’s surgical activity to approximately 80% of historical volumes. Patients will be contacted by the hospital if their procedure has been rescheduled. There is no need to call the hospital. *** En octobre, Horizon Santé-Nord (HSN) a commencé à accélérer son volume de chirurgies au bloc opératoire pour réduire la liste d'attente en chirurgie qui s'est allongée pendant la première vague de la pandémie, amenant son volume chirurgical à 105 % des volumes historiques. À la lumière de l'éclosion de COVID-19 déclarée samedi soir dans les couloirs J et K du niveau 6 de la tour Sud du Centre de santé du lac Ramsey, HSN doit ralentir son volume de chirurgies par mesure de précaution. Today we’re celebrating the #HSNHeroes who work on the 6th floor of our South Tower in the Respiratory Care Unit. Taking care of COVID-19 patients, this dedicated team is on the front line of the pandemic for our community. Kayla Stevens is the Clinical Manager for the unit and is incredibly proud of the way her team has met the challenges of COVID-19.... I am so proud of how this team has pulled together to support patients and their families going through COVID-19. They adapted so quickly and turned one third of our unit over to set up a COVID cohort hallway over the past couple of weeks. It hasn’t been an easy time but they are caring for their patients and supporting each other with grace and compassion. Mark Hartman, HSN’s Senior Vice President of Patient Experience, says he is continually impressed with the resilience of HSN staff in the face of COVID-19, especially the team in the Respiratory Care Unit. They have provided outstanding care for a high number of COVID-19 patients recently. Kayla and their Program Director Joanne Collin, along with the staff and physicians on this unit have been working tirelessly the past few weeks. They are a great example of the compassionate care being provided at HSN for patients and families throughout the pandemic. Aujourd’hui, nous célébrons les #hérosHSN qui travaillent à l’Unité des soins respiratoires située au niveau 6 de la tour Sud. S’occupant des patients infectés à la COVID-19, cette équipe dévouée combat la pandémie sur le front pour le bien de notre communauté. Kayla Stevens, gestionnaire clinique de l’unité, se dit extrêmement fière de la façon dont son équipe a affronté les défis de la COVID-19. C’est avec beaucoup de fierté que je remercie les membres de cette équipe qui se sont retroussé les manches pour appuyer les patients et leur famille pendant la pandémie. Ces dernières semaines, ils se sont adaptés à la situation sur le coup en aménageant un couloir, occupant un tiers de notre unité, pour y recevoir les patients atteints de la COVID-19. Cela n’a pas été facile, mais ces professionnels réussissent à soigner leurs patients tout en s’épaulant les uns les autres avec grâce et compassion. Mark Hartman, vice-président principal de l’Expérience des patients d’HSN, se dit sans cesse impressionné par la résilience dont fait preuve le personnel d’HSN, surtout l’équipe de l’Unité des soins respiratoires, face à la COVID-19. L’équipe a prodigué des soins exceptionnels à un grand nombre de patients atteints de la COVID-19 récemment. Kayla et la directrice du programme, Joanne Collin, ainsi que les membres du personnel et les médecins de l’unité ont travaillé sans relâche ces dernières semaines. Chez eux, on voit à quel point les soins sont offerts avec compassion aux patients et aux familles, ici à HSN, pendant la pandémie.

Today we launch the first Virtual Emergency Department in Northern Ontario. HSN’s Virtual ED service is available Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. Patients with non-life threatening conditions can log onto www.hsnsudbury.ca/virtualed and fill out a form requesting a same-day appointment, in French or English, with an Emergency Department physician. Patients will be contacted by a nurse within an hour of submitting their request form to have their situation as...sessed. A time for a video appointment with a physician will then be confirmed if appropriate, or the patient may be advised to come to the Emergency Department for a visit in person if necessary. Secure internet access and a working computer or smartphone are required to access HSN’s Virtual ED. Patients who have a primary healthcare provider such as a family physician or nurse practitioner, are encouraged to attempt to access their services first before accessing the Virtual ED. The Virtual ED is not recommended for patients under the age of 12 months, or anyone with serious or life threatening medical issues. For healthcare emergencies, patients should contact 911 or come directly to the Emergency Department. On encourage les patients qui ont un fournisseur de soins primaires comme un médecin ou une infirmière praticienne à essayer d’obtenir une consultation avec cette personne avant d’accéder au Service des urgences virtuel. Ce service n’est pas recommandé pour les enfants ayant moins de 12 mois ou pour les personnes dont le problème de santé est grave ou menace la vie. HSN has been named one of Re$earch Infosource’s top 40 research hospitals for the seventh consecutive year. Research at the hospital, like the work of Dr. Robert Ohle, helps us to advance patient care. Dr. Ohle is an emergency department (ED) physician at HSN and has been recognized internationally for his research on Acute Acute Aortic Syndrome (AAS), a condition caused by a tear in the aorta, the largest blood vessel in the body. Dr Ohle recently received a grant from the ...Northern Ontario Academic Medical Association (NOAMA) to adapt and improve existing American and European guidelines for AAS. AAS is a rare but very serious and potentially lethal heart condition. For patients these guidelines mean they will be diagnosed sooner, and receive the best possible care, whether they are seen for instance in Timmins, Sudbury or Toronto, said Dr. Ohle. In the last year, Health Sciences North had 13 organ donors, which led to 38 transplants, and ultimately 38 lives saved from the work at the hospital. We are looking for healthy volunteers for a cancer research study. If you are interested in participating you will need to be 20 to 60 years old, you do not use tobacco or anti-inflammatory drugs, and you have no previous history of anaemia (a blood condition). Participation is completely voluntary and you are free to stop participating at any time. Volunteers will be compensated for time, travel, parking expenses and inconvenience in donating blood for this study. Public Health Sudbury & Districts moving to yellow level of provincial COVID-19 response framework https://www.phsd.ca/public-health-sudbury-districts-moving/ ... Today, the Government of Ontario placed Public Health Sudbury & Districts in the Yellow-Protect category of the provincial COVID-19 response framework. Strengthened public health measures will come into effect in our service area to help control the spread of COVID-19 on Monday, November 16, 2020, at 12:01 a.m. These measures include limited hours of operations for certain settings, reduced recreational program sizes, additional enforcements and fines, and enhanced education in high-risk settings. Our case counts are at an all-time high with 42 (updated) of our 204 total cases reported in the last week alone. We are averaging about 12 high risk contacts for each case so far. These numbers combined with how stretched our public health and health care systems are, mean that stronger protection measures are needed, said Dr. Penny Sutcliffe, Medical Officer of Health with Public Health Sudbury & Districts. The Yellow-Protect restrictions must be accompanied by a re-commitment of everyone to the basic public health prevention measures. How this surge in cases evolves and the measures and restrictions that will be necessary to control it are in our hands. Make no mistake, our everyday actions either allow the virus to spread or allow us to contain it. We can choose wisely and dig deep, added Dr. Sutcliffe. Regardless of which provincial category we are classified in, we must assume that COVID-19 is everywhere and take necessary precautions.
