The importance of donating blood has been long-discussed, yet many have often skipped this issue. Blood is the most precious gift that anyone can give to another person the gift of life. A decision to donate your blood can save a life, or even several if your blood is separated into its components red cells, platelets and plasma which can be used individually for patients with specific conditions. Stay tuned to our next event to learn more about how to donate blood in your local community! #blooddrive #blooddonation

This week we would like to acknowledge Marsha P. Johnson. The P in her name stood for Pay it no mind which is what Marsha said in response to questions about her gender. She was a prominent figure in the Stonewall uprising of 1969. The stonewall riots were a series of spontaneous demonstrations by members of the gay community in response to a police raid in June 1969 at the Stonewall Inn in Manhattan, New York. Many in the LGBTQ community give credit to Johnson for throwi...ng the first brick or shot glass that sparked the riots, however, Marsha said she didn’t arrive at the bar until rioting was underway. #womenshistorymonth #womenshistory #marshapjohnson

This week we would like to acknowledge The Famous Five: Henrietta Muir Edwards, Nellie McClung, Louise McKinney, Emily Murphy, and Irene Parlby. They fought for the recognition of women as ‘persons’ under the British North America Act. In 1928, the Supreme Court ruled that women were not qualified as ‘persons.’ The Famous Five came together before the Supreme Court to on March 14, 1928 to fight for women’s status as ‘persons.’... On October 18, 1929, the judicial committee overruled the Supreme Court and held that women were qualified persons and eligible to be appointed to the Senate. #womenshistorymonth #womenshistory #thefamousfive

This week we would like to acknowledge Malala Yousafzai who so bravely stood up for the education of girls even at the expense of her own life. Malala was targeted by the Taliban and shot in the head for speaking out publicly on girls’ right to learn. She established Malala fund, a charity dedicated to giving every girl an opportunity to achieve a future she chooses. Malala often visits many countries to meet with girls fighting poverty, wars, child marriage, and discrimina...tion to go to school. In October 2014, at just 17 years old, Malala became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for her fight for the right of every child to receive an education. #womenshistorymonth #womenshistory #malalayousafzai

Keeping Up With Kurrent Events - Series 3 - Black Excellence for Black History Month Before the world discovered Rosa Parks, there was Claudette Colvin. In March 1955, Claudette got on the bus after school. Her teacher had just been talking about important Black figures in history, so Claudette was feeling inspired. She sat on the middle seat on the bus, and refused to move when a white woman asked her to change seats. The police handcuffed Claudette, took her off the bus an...d placed her in an adult jail. 9 months later, Rosa Parks did the same thing, she refused to move to the back of the bus. Claudette got to know Rosa very well later on, and she believes Rosa was chosen to be the face of the movement because she fit the profile, the kind associated with middle class. The National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP) did not accept Claudette because she was young and later became pregnant. Therefore, Claudette was forgotten about. #blackhistorymonth #blackhistory #claudettecolvin #blackexcellence

As the farmers’ protest takes place in India, the world’s largest democracy, many domestic and international human rights have been violated by the Indian government and the Indian police force. The farmers have been peacefully protesting for months in India’s capitol, Delhi, against the three farms bills passed by the BJP party. The bill includes laws such as privatization of agriculture and removal of Minimum Selling Price which many small farmers are afraid will hurt them ...in long-run. The Indian government has used police brutality, water cannons, tear gas and road blockades such as concrete walls and barbed wires to suppress the protestors. They also cut off internet at protest sites around Delhi and have charged many activists and journals unlawfully. The government has also cut off protestors’ access to sanitation, food and water. These unlawful tactics have created a very hostile and unsafe environment for the protestors as they fight to raiser their voices against the government. #istandwithfarmers #farmersprotest See more

Keeping Up With The Kurrent Events- Series 2- Humanitarians of the world Humanitarian Society of Vancouver would like to recognize Greta Thunberg for her incredible work on bringing awareness to the climate change crisis. Greta is a climate change activist from Stockholm Sweden. At the age of 15 she skipped school to protest in front of Sweden’s parliament building. She was determined to continue her protest until the government met the carbon emissions target agreed by world... leaders in 2015. She went viral on social media which encouraged over 20,000 students around the world to protest. In 2019, Greta took the school year off to continue campaigning for climate change. She has attended protests and has spoken at conferences internationally. For instance, she had travelled to New York, by boat, to speak to world leaders at the UN Climate Action Summit. Although Greta has won many awards, she would rather see real change. #climatechange #globalwarming #gretathunberg #humanitarian #climateactivism

Year 2020 has been challenging for many of us due to the global pandemic and the strain it has put on our daily lives. It was also a year when we started our work as a non-profit organization to help support our community by taking different initiatives. We started off with our mask drive, then cleaning up our local beach, feeding the homeless population of Whalley area of Surrey and finally, ending our year with holding a toy drive for BC Children’s Hospital. With the help o...f your generous donations and our sponsors, we were able to make each of our events successful and reach beyond the goals we had set up. We also expanded our team to include members that shared similar goals in terms of serving our community as our organization. We are grateful for all the support you have shown us this year and as we step into 2021, we will continue to work with our community on different causes and grow as a non-profit organization. We would again like to wish everyone a very happy and prosperous new year. #happynewyear #2021 See more

Masks have become everyday essentials as COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact many throughout the world. They play a tremendous role in stopping the spread and to keep those around us safe. However, it is important that we properly dispose single-use masks for sanitary reasons as well as to prevent the damages that it can cause to our environment. It is estimated that 1.56 billion masks used in 2020 will end up in our oceans and can pose risks to the marine ecosystem. Follow the step-by-step guideline to insure a proper disposal of these masks and help create a safer and clean environment. #covid_19 #mask #cleanenvironment Sources: @iberdrola @ctvnews

A new covid-19 variant, B.1.1.7, has been discovered in the United Kingdom. This variant is believed to be 70% more transmissible than Covid-19 and has been spreading globally, including countries such as Canada, Sweden and Japan. So far, the variant has not shown to have more severe symptoms or increased risk of death. More research is being conducted to show the effects of vaccines on this new variant. Health officials have advised to keep following the safety guidelines issued for Covid-19 to help prevent the spread of B.1.1.7.

Series 1 - Crisis around the world In October of 2020, Vietnam suffered a real tragedy when heavy floods hit its central province. Caused by 7 tropical storms and typhoons, these floods continue to devastate the country, having left over 200 people dead or missing and displacing many others. This has been one of the worst floods that the country has faced in decades. Unfortunately, the situation has been predicted to get worse before it gets better due to the monsoon season which will cause more rainfall. For ways to help, visit Pacific Links Foundation’s page on Facebook who have been raising funds to support those who are effected. Our thoughts and prayers are with Vietnam. #crisis #keepingupwiththekurrentaffairs

There is a genocide happening against Uyghur Muslims in China right now. In 2015, China had began building facilities in a region known as Xinjiang, but the purposes of these buildings were unknown. Xinjiang is a region where 11 million Uyghur Muslims live, but it was too early for anyone to gain suspicion about the construction. In 2018, through satellite images, it became clear that many camps were built in Xinjiang. The government said these were re-education camps for U...yghurs; however, they are actually forms of internment camps built to strip Uyghurs of their religion and ethnic identity. The enslaved Muslims have faced physical abuse such as waterboarding and sleep deprivation. Women have faced sexual abuse and forced sterilization. The enslaved Muslims have also been forced into labour. 20% of the worlds cotton is forcibly produced by 570,000 Uyghur Muslims. This cotton is then used by the clothing industry; Therefore, the fashion industry benefits from the enslavement of Uyghur Muslims. There are about 83 brands that benefit from Uyghur forced labour such as Nike, Uniqlo, H&M, Zara, Victoria Secret and many more. #UyghurMuslims #StandWithUyghurs #FreeUyghurs #UighurMuslims See more

The Humanitarian Society of Vancouver would like to sincerely thank everyone who supported our efforts and donated to our Toys for Joy drive. As the weeks went on, the Toy Drive gained momentum and the residents of our community worked together to not only achieve our goal, but completely supersede our expectations in every way. Through the fundraising efforts of our team and your countless donations, we were able to raise approximately $1900 worth of toy donations. Although... we were not able to give the toys to the children of @bcchf directly due to COVID-19 restrictions, we know that all the people who donated helped bring a smile to a child’s face this holiday season. It’s heartbreaking to see the conditions many of these children face and bringing some normality to their lives this holiday season feels like a blessing. #ToysForJoy #ThankYou See more

BC Children’s Hospital is the only hospital in British Columbia that is dedicated exclusively to children. A total of 96,000 children from all over the province visit the hospital each year for its services. The campus also includes a research centre where more than 1000 researchers have been contributing their knowledge, time and effort to discover new treatments for children that are battling illnesses. We want to thank the hospital and the healthcare professionals for standing by the side of children and advancing knowledge and clinical care. For our next upcoming event, Humanitarian Society of Vancouver is planning to work with the community to donate to these children. Visit https://www.bcchf.ca to find out more about their work and ways to help.

The crisis, that began in the mid-1980s, has been worsening over the years in Vancouver and its suburbs. Today, we are taking the time to highlight one of the biggest issues that our community faces and hope to spread awareness through this post. The COVID-19 pandemic is putting significant strain on vital hospital resources including much-needed Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Across BC, there is an impending shortage of this critical equipment in our hospitals and health-care settings. As our hospitals continue to combat and respond to the critical demand of COVID-19, we are calling on our communities to help nurses, doctors, and other front-line health professionals by donating unused & unopened masks, gowns a...nd eye protection. We need to act now. N95 masks, in particular, are in scarce supply. If you have unopened boxes of N95 masks, please consider donating them. Those in the veterinary, construction, salon, tattoo, dentistry and cosmetic surgery industries may have access to this vital equipment. Moreover, HSV will be purchasing N95 masks; therefore, we will also be taking monetary donations. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept previously used masks, gowns or goggles, or unaddressed packages delivered by Canada Post. Your generous donations can be picked up Monday to Friday from 5pm to 8pm. We will also be hosting a door-to-door fundraising event. More information regarding volunteering and sign-up for the fundraiser will be provided soon. Furthermore, proper precautions will be put in place to ensure safety during pick-up of supplies.
