"These multicoloured interlocking plastic bricks fuel creativity for all ages. They were invented by Ole Kirk Kristiansen, the proprietor of the Danish company LEGO. In a stroke of brilliance, Kristiansen not only patented the actual brick, but also the LEGO building system. The plastic bricks are sturdy and any structures created will not fall apart when knocked over; they need to be pulled apart. Did you know that the company name "LEGO" are the first two letters of two wor...ds, LEg GOdt, Danish for "play well"? " From the desk of Bette. . The theme guiding Holocaust remembrance and education in 2021 is Facing the Aftermath: Recovery and Reconstitution after the Holocaust. . "Seventy-six years ago today, the Auschwitz Birkenau labour camp was liberated by the Allies in World War 2. The cruel, industrial extermination of Jews, Soviets, Polish, Serbs, the disabled, Roma, Sinti, gay men and women, and Jehovah's Witnesses, is known as the Holocaust (Greek holokauston or "totally burnt"). In Israel, Holocaust Day... Remembrance is Yom HaShoah (Day of Catatrophe). Memorials abound around the globe, such as Auschwitz in Poland or the Yad Vashem in Israel. "This count is an annual event, in over 2000 communities in the Western Hemisphere. Starting on December 14, all the collected data is compiled on January 5 supporting the Audubon Society's work for the year. A century ago, a tradition called the Christmas Side Hunt saw hunters competing for the biggest pile of feather or fur-bearing kills at the end of the shoot. The count was started by Audubon officer and ornithologist Frank Chapman in 1900, to track declining bird populat...ions. It was then referred to as the "Christmas Bird Census"." From the desk of Bette. . Open your OverDrive or Libby app on your tablet or mobile device and read about John James Audubon . This Strange Wilderness: The Life and Art of John James Audubon . "Birds were "the objects of my greatest delight," wrote John James Audubon (17851851), founder of modern ornithology and one of the world's greatest bird painters. His masterpiece, The Birds of America depicts almost five hundred North American bird species, each imagelifelike and life sizerendered in vibrant color. Audubon was also an explorer, a woodsman, a hunter, an entertaining and prolific writer, and an energetic self-promoter. Through talent and dogged determination, he rose from backwoods obscurity to international fame." Quote from OverDrive. . "In a small sauce pan, make a thick paste with cocoa, sugar, a drop of vanilla and the milk you're using, mix it up well, it'll still be gritty. While stirring, add the rest of your milk and keep stirring to melt the sugar. Heat the cocoa until piping hot. Now, get a nice big mug, throw as many chocolate chips or chopped chocolate in the bottom, and pour your hot cocoa over it. DO NOT STIR!!!! Garnish your cocoa anyway you like. That's my recipe for cocoa with "sludge". The origins of this day are unknown. Did you know that the first chocolate drink was invented by the Mayans over 2000 years ago? So enjoy the tradition and drink up!" From the desk of Bette. . Enough said. What are you waiting for? Make a cup for everyone in your family!
