MEDIA RELEASE: Mayor Ed Holder’s Statement on Province Ordering London to ‘Red’ COVID-19 Restrictions As someone with family involved in running small business...es, I empathize deeply with all those who will be severely impacted by this provincial order. These types of establishments have done absolutely everything that’s been asked of them, often on very short notice and great cost, while constantly adapting to ensure members of the public are kept safe from COVID-19. According to the available data, they are not responsible for the level of spread we’ve been experiencing in our community recently, yet these businesses and individuals wind up bearing a significant brunt of the consequences. For those who seek to assign blame, I think it’s equally unfair and, frankly, unacceptable to point the finger at local healthcare workers. Since the onset of this pandemic, they have been on the frontlines every day, working extremely long hours, missing family members, and making significant sacrifices, all in an effort to save lives and bring comfort to those who are ill. They continue to do this on a daily basis, during the midst of a significant outbreak at University Hospital, and those individuals deserve only our deepest thanks and admiration. I appreciate the anger, frustration, and disappointment surrounding this decision by the Ontario Government. There will be no shortage of opinions and reactions, but I would rather focus on where there is widespread agreement: nobody in London likes where we’re at right now, nobody in London wants our situation to worsen, and everybody in London wants things to improve as fast as possible. That is my primary focus, and it should be ours collectively. Aside from supporting local businesses with our wallets like never before, working together to flatten this recent surge is the best way all of us can contribute to lessening the already significant impacts. That effort must begin now. The choices we make on a daily basis will determine whether our situation improves, or continues to worsen. This is completely within our ability to control. When these new restrictions take hold on Monday, I hope all Londoners remember how often, and in how many ways, small businesses have been there for us over the years. It’s our turn now to show up for them. -30-

Winter is coming, so #TipTuesday is all about winter driving to have everyone prepared! Winter driving can sometimes be a daunting task, especially when conditions are snowy or icy. Here are some tips on how to drive safely! 1. SLOW DOWN! This one may be obvious - but it’s important. There is no such thing as a "safe" speed range when you drive on snow or ice. Reduce your speed to correspond with conditions. 2. Be alert. Driving visibility is low in bad ...weather. Keep it slow and keep your eyes peeled for all types of movement on the road. 3. Allow for extra travelling time. Don’t underestimate how easy it is to lose control of your vehicle in poor weather conditions. Plan your trip ahead to allow for extra travelling time! 4. Keep a safe distance. Distance between vehicles is key when driving in a snowstorm as you need a reasonable amount of space and time to brake safely. 5. Never slam on the brake.While operating a vehicle in a bad weather condition, never brake hard or accelerate while turning a corner. Choose one that's fresh, with a sturdy stem, no bruises, and a flat bottom so it won't roll while you carve. 2. Prep your spooky design. If you draw your jack-o'-lantern face to size on paper, you can tape it to the front of the pumpkin to sketch the outlines by poking holes along the lines.... 3. Carve carefully. Start by making simple rough cuts and you can always go back and clean up the edges of your design later. Always cut away from you in case the knife slips! 4. Make your pumpkin shine. Get plenty of exercise. Physical activity is a natural way to reduce stress and improve mental wellbeing. Parents are the learning coaches to support children’s education, so don’t be shy to set up a direct line of communication with the teachers! Being proactive is essential if your child is struggling with distance learning. 5. Remove learning barriers. Online education materials may sometimes be hard to understand.
