Thanh was born in #Vietnam and spent the first 9 years of her life there. She and her family immigrated to Canada as refugees in 1984. Thanh learned about the needs for scholarships for students with challenging circumstances and joined #ICO_world in 2018 and began raising #funds and developing the #VietnamEducation Initiative. Women hoe the field while carrying babies on their back for $1/ day which leads to sexual liaisons, multiplying and hence crushing poverty. Unwed moms were provided with training in tailoring and dying clothes. with the training, we provided they were able to make 500 masks for a local hospital.... which did make a difference we will help them successfully run shops. The City of Victoria is providing funding to help newcomers thrive and is asking for community input on how to allocate the funds. A number of people have submitted proposals to get this funding - including our ICO member, Dr. Sherry Dale, who wants to provide a financial literacy program. This program would teach students the basics of money management: budgeting, saving, debt, investing, and giving. That knowledge lays a foundation for students to build strong money habits early on and avoid many of the mistakes that lead to lifelong money struggles. Nakuru Meru school sponsorship update: Our 14 Pokot girls are at home until the school restarts There was a huge flood in August that washed a bridge out which was the main access to the region, ICO school sponsorship supports food for the students so with an extra $3000 we sent them a huge load of food supplies this will tide them over till the bridge is rebuilt. Nepal update: ICO aided in paying for a surgery and medicine expenses of a young unemployed women who was suffering from a lung condition. And helped a new widow with 2 kids and no income, with food for a month and guaranteed school fees.... Sanitary kits were distributed to women’s shelters and safe homes and quarantine centres. Also a food distribution program was established for the vulnerable.
