Cosmic rays offer a solution to the longstanding challenge of how to monitor and optimize large-scale steam-assisted gravity drainage (#SAGD) operations cost-effectively for the oil and gas industry. Our favourite subatomic particle -- the muon -- is created many kms above the Earth's surface when cosmic rays bombard the upper atmosphere. The lifetime of a muon is about 2 microseconds, but it travels toward the planet's surface at about 300,000 km/second -- the speed of light in vacuum. As a result, its internal clock 'runs slow' compared to what we would observe on Earth, extending its lifetime and ensuring that it can arrive at the surface before decaying. This is Einst...ein's Theory of Special Relativity at work! #cool When muons pass through objects on or under the surface (up to 1 km deep), they are slowed down by the higher-density portions of the object, but not as much by the less dense parts.
