If your furnace fails , reset it by turning the main power switch off then on again. (Usually located on the ceiling above) Remove the upper panel cover and watch the sequence of operation the furnace then takes. Usually, it's this; 1) inducer fan motor starts(upper electric motor for exhaust venting.) 2) hot surface igniter glows hot. 3) gas valve opens and allows gas through the burners, igniting on contact with the hsi, and main burners fire. 4) blower motor (lower large e...lectric motor at bottom) for hot air vent starts and distributes the heat. This can help you identify what's wrong with your furnace if the reset doesn't correct the problem. (observe to what stage it gets to) Handy people; remember the most common problem is the "flame sensor" which is a small metal rod that sits in the flames of one of the burners. If it is coated with a white crusty looking substance,(oxidation)..it usually won't work, causing your furnace to shut down within 5-10 secs of the burners igniting. Turn the main power off. Remove the flame sensor and lightly sand it with mesh cloth or sandpaper until it's clean. Do-not sand it down too much or you'll wreck it. Just enough to remove the crusty bits and exposing the metal surface again. Re-install, reset. This will generally give you a few more months of life out of your flame sensor and get you through some cold weather until you can get a new replacement part. Typically a new flame sensor will last 2-6 years.
