B.C. has had 58,107 cases of COVID-19 since March. As of yesterday, we’ve given 59,902 vaccines. COVID-19 vaccinations > COVID-19 cases. This is a big moment. We still have a long way to go and the next few months won’t be easy, but we’re making important progress. We’ve all made sacrifices and we all have a role to play in ending this pandemic, but the end is in sight. We are going to beat this virus.... *Note: Case & vaccination numbers are from Jan. 11, 2021.

: I am eligible to get the COVID-19 vaccine - is there a way I can give it to my grandchild instead? To answer the question in short; no, the first round of vaccines are only available for those who are most vulnerable to COVID-19. This is because when we protect those most at risk, we protect all of us. However, millions of vaccines are on their way, and soon all our loved ones who want immunity will have it! *We get asked a lot of great vaccine questions on the ImmunizeBC website. It’s both moving and inspiring to see these questions coming in, and reminds us of the powerful connection we share with those we care about. Following a year filled with gloom and worry, there is a lot we can learn from these words of generosity and caring.*

When we get vaccinated, we protect those who are at risk in our communities.

, - ? All of us here get asked this a lot. And yes, we do have a worry. It’s not potential side-effects, it’s not distribution, or the effectiveness of the vaccine. It’s what is inevitably going to happen, and there’s nothing we can do to stop it. Before we get into what "it" is, did you know that according to the WHO, 17 million people die of heart disease and stroke every year? Or that ...in Canada alone, there will be over 200,000 new cancer cases in 2020? There’s nothing unusual about all of this, and most people don’t notice these big numbers. This is just how many people get sick or die in a year. Yet if everyone in the world gets vaccinated, these same numbers will sound a lot worse. 17 million people who take the vaccine will die of heart attack and stroke. 200,000 Canadians who take the vaccine will probably get cancer. The numbers are the same as before. These things will happen with or without the vaccine. But how worried do these numbers make you feel now? It’s human nature to feel worried, and false side effects will be easy to find. They’ll even sound convincing. Here’s a real example that haunts us: a child recently came into a B.C. clinic for routine vaccination and had a seizure as the nurse was drawing the vaccine from the vial. Turns out the child had undiagnosed epilepsy. If this seizure happened only moments laterafter receiving the vaccinationthe seizure could have been blamed on the vaccine. Not only would this have been incorrect, it could have stopped the child from receiving an extremely important epilepsy diagnosis. This is what keeps us up at night. The vaccine is here. Canada’s vaccine approval and monitoring system has proven itself year after year, for decades. The end is in sight, and we can beat it, but only if we get vaccinated. But with so many people getting vaccinated all at once, there will be false side effects. There will be rumours and misinformation that are simply not true. Misinformation can take hold of any of us. Fighting misinformation will be our most challenging fight. This is a fight where we don’t know the outcome, where every one of us has a role to play. Science vs. Misinformation. This is what worries us.
