MEET OUR NEWEST TRAINING COACH JÚLÍA GRÉTARSDÓTTIR Julia is a recent graduate from Capilano University finishing with a Diploma in Human ... Kinetics with a focus on Physical Education. She has done some coaching on and off the ice with figure skaters and hockey players, and has a big interest in body flow, range of motion and flexibility. In the future she would like to pursue a career in nursing with a focus on the Emergency Department. Julia is most always seen smiling and encouraging others with positivity and exuberant energy. This has been demonstrated throughout her figure skating career where she always brought joy to the ice or on hand with a pep talk to help her fellow skaters achieve their goals. Through her skating career she had the opportunity to compete with the Icelandic national team internationally at the highest level, setting several records and is a three-time National Figure Skating Champion of Iceland. At Innovative Fitness we take pride in giving back to our community. Julia has always actively volunteered in the figure skating community which makes her the perfect fit as a training coach. She is excited to join the IFC family and is honoured to work alongside like-minded and hardworking teammates. She is motivated to help any individual achieve their goals and to live their best life. "There are three ingredients required to form a habit: a trigger, a reward, and lots of repetition. Applying this to fitness, creating a visual trigger to help you get to the gym could be as simple as setting your sneakers and water bottle, or gym bag, near the door many hours before you intend to leave. In the case of getting to the gym on time, or at all, a reward could be a small gift-to-self like justifying a minor purchase of exercise clothing after a few sessions of... training. This type of rewards solution may not be long-term sustainable for you, but in the early days of habit-setting it creates a positive feedback loop in your brain. (PRO TIP: avoid using food as a reward. This trap will set you up for patterns of emotional eating behaviour which our Beyond Nutrition coaches advise against.) Finally the real trick to turning a goal into a habit once and for all is repetition. The best way to train your brain to repeat behaviour without having to think about it, is to repeat the same sequence daily for at least two months. Or in the case of getting back to your fitness goals, every other day would be sufficient, as long as you stick to the plan. Hiring a personal trainer who will hold you accountable to your own goals is also a major motivational pull. It’s far too easy to break a good habit if there’s no repetition in place.
