We have recently invested in two new EDM machines from Agie-Charmilles. #1 - CUT 350 Wire EDM with submerged cutting and the latest generator technology. With this new acquisition we can take our surface finishes down to 0.22 ra um in steel. The latest Digital IPG Generator offers anti-electrolysis circuitry and a cleaner cut with less surface impact on the work piece. #2 - Drill 20 High Speed CNC EDM Drill, this is a new capability for us which drastically reduces the time required to EDM holes. With this machine we can EDM hole diameters from .012" to .118" [0.3mm to 3mm] either thru or blind holes can be cut, up to 7.87" deep. Pretty much any conductive material can be cut including nickel based alloys, hardened steels, and even carbide.

Frank Klomp, General Manager at Innovative Tool & Die Inc., is a big supporter of the Formula UBC project and was generous enough to give a few of our members a... tour of his shop. We learned a lot about the design and manufacturing of tooling for injection moulds as well as the ins and outs of electrical discharge machining (EDM). Frank supports the team by machining components for the car including the sprocket adapter for our 2018 vehicle where he used wire EDM to produce the spline found on our differential. Thanks to Innovative Tool & Die Inc. for producing our sprocket carrier tripod sleeves! Their wire EDM process matched the high tolerances required for these crucial components and resulted in an incredibly smooth surface finish.
