A good article about the importance of permits. All permits are important, building, electrical, plumbing or gas, for both safety reasons and insurance purposes. If you hire a contractor, ask for a copy of the permit and the final inspection when work is done. Be wary if your contractor says you don’t need a permit for work being done, if you feel a permit is needed, contact the applicable authority and ask. After all, if something were to happen later on, it could be your insurance company that is denying your claim, while your contractor is in the clear, with no official record of him having done any work at all.

If you live in a newer home, there is a good chance you may have an HRV (Heat Recovery Ventilator), which provides your home with fresh clean air while exhausting the dirty air. They only work when they are clean though. These filters were taken out of the HRV installed in the home we just purchased. When I tried cleaning them under the tap, the one on the left disintegrated in my hand. I don’t believe they had ever been cleaned in 10 years. HRV filters should be cleaned every 2 months, but often HRV’s are installed in a way that makes access to the filters very difficult, so they are overlooked.
