Please make sure youre prepared. Here are a few tips to protect yourself and your family during heavy rainfall: Clean your eavestrough. Remove any debris so that water can flow freely.... Clear all culverts and catch basins. If blocked, it can cause flooding. If your basement is prone to flooding, remove valuables from the floor and put them in a safe place. If your home has a backwater valve or sump pump, ensure that theyre powered on and functioning correctly. If you see a flooded area on the road dont drive your car through it. This can be dangerous and can cause damage to the vehicle. If you see a flooded road, alert your city officials immediately. Steer clear of streams and ponds. Water levels may rise to dangerous levels. Avoid frozen bodies of water. Rain mixed with higher temperatures will weaken ice.
