I made a mistake last night during our Council meeting regarding the potential coal mining operations on Category 2 land and the rescission of the Coal Policy of 1976. I stated that consultation was completed, but in reality there was none. The Coal Policy was in fact rescinded without public consultation. I referred incorrectly to the lease application consultation with a due date of January 15th, 2021. I am disappointed that in the government's haste to reduce red-tape they... failed to consult with stakeholders. Even if the modern regulations are better equipped to manage resource development, the right thing to do was to complete fulsome engagement. I love our backyard wilderness and will stand opposed to such resource development.
