IODE Alberta

2020 is a year of celebration for IODE Alberta! Over the next 12 months, members will be honouring 100 years of service in the province. To mark the occasion and further our ongoing commitment to children in the province IODE Alberta will raise $100,000 to support the healing journey for children at risk across Alberta. Building on a long-standing partnership with the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters (ACWS) to provide effective interventions for children who have live...d with violence in their lives, The Healing Brain: Supporting Resilience and Hope ACWS Children’s Curriculum, is grounded in the neuroscience of trauma, brain development, and the impact of toxic stress on children. The $100,000 would continue to fund education programs for staff, volunteers and professionals who serve shelters as well as associated child and family serving agencies. The funds will also facilitate formalized on-line courses. Research shows that one caring adult can have a profound impact on healthy development mitigating the harms done to children. Family violence has a profound impact on children. It can be particularly harmful for preschool children, as this is when substantial brain growth and development occurs. The proportion of women in shelters with children has been increasing over the last decade at alarming rates. For more than 73 years, IODE Alberta has supported family violence and abuse prevention programs in Alberta and will continue to do so. To end family violence and abuse starts with us. IODE Colonel James Macleod members organized a 100th anniversary celebration for IODE Calgary. Members past and present were in attendance and enjoyed an afternoon of friendship, reminiscing and delicious food. The special cake was made by a past bursary recipient who used her bursary to complete the Culinary Program at Mount Royal University.

It was great to see so many attend the September provincial executive meeting for IODE Alberta.

IODE Frontenac members worked tirelessly to set up for their 75th annual rummage sale. This is one of their main fundraising events.
