Club Spotlight Port Elgin Karate Club was formed in 1981 by Wayne Shorey and Brian Antler, and has been an active and successful dojo ever since! More than 75 people have trained and received their black belts in Port Elgin which is a testament to the hard work and dedication of their local Sensei. Head sensei have included Brian Antler, Wayne Shorey, Frank Fiesthauer, Steve Scott, Henry Marsh and the current head Sensei Ken Wrightson.... They are hoping to start training again in the fall, and want to wish everyone health and happiness on their behalf. Be kind to each other! We couldn't agree more, and hope to see everyone soon!!
#Memories This article was from the newspaper in #portelginontario in the 80s. There are many friends from near and far in this photo. We appreciate you sending this in Paul Keenan!
Club Spotlight The Deep River Karate Club was formed in 1977 by Ken Chaplin and Dave Martin. As the primary industry in Deep River revolved around Atomic Energy of Canada, it meant that many people would come and go as their careers evolved. They all contributed immensely and positively impacted the training and lives of students past and present. These Sensei included: Dave Mercier, Gerry and Mary Tooley, and Frank Feisthouer. Many early students worked hard to receive th...eir black belts and assisted with instruction for many years including Ima Kalos, Linda Deverno and Paul Lee. Ron Rogge, a longtime student of Ken Chaplin, took over in 2005. His contributions have led to a dojo that is accomplished, knowledgeable and a strong presence in our national Itosu-Kai Community. Currently, he is assisted by Sensei Do, Boyer, Chow, Hagberg and Karivelil. Do you have any stories about the Deep River Karate Club? Comment below!
Club Spotlight Let us introduce you to Karate - Owen Sound (Shito-Ryu Itosu-Kai Karate Association) ! Here is another amazing group of Karateka that we know you will recognise. This dojo was started in 1996 by Bill Farrar and Cathy Morrison. Tsumura Shihan joined them for their first small ranking in 1997. ... Now settled into their location at St. Basil's Elementary School, Farrar Sensei is assisted by Kirby Sensei, who was one of his original students in 1996. Wilkins, Hodge and Benson Sensei are just a few of the accomplished students that train in #OwenSound If you happen to love Karate AND fishing (just like Tsumura Shihan), we hope you can visit this awesome group of our Itosu-Kai Family some day soon!

Club Spotlight Manitsowin Karate Club in was founded in 1984 in Edmonton, AB. Menary Sensei (one of Tsumura Shihan's earliest students) together with Beachamp Sensei had developed in interest and appreciation of North Albertan #Cree culture, and became increasingly aware of the parallels between Cree warrior beliefs and Okinawan martial arts. Their observations inspired them to name their new club "Manatisowin", which is the Cree word for "Good Life". When Lindsay and Radu...lski Sensei moved to Edmonton in 1988, they quickly became involved with the new dojo. As they had been longtime friends with Menary and Beauchamp, they were a perfect fit to carry the torch and keep Manitisowin growing, learning, and representing Itosu-Kai all over Canada and the world. Lindsay and Raduski Sensei are both fixtures in the national community, and you may have met Sensei Shave, Mackenzie, Lynne, Mackie and Ward Do you have any fun stories about Manatisowin Dojo? Submission #35 "If you believe in yourself, anything is possible to achieve" -Sensei Fred Donnelly... Thank you Sensei! Stay safe everyone
Submission #34!! This amazing collection of photos shows some great memories including: a small Kobudo ranking at the JCCC (Peter Hanzal, Tsumura Shihan, Marjorie Hunter and the late Helmut Grossman), the late Sensei Frank Robinson with Tsumura Shihan, a belt presentation at a tournament (at that time black belts were presented during tournaments) and the time Sensei Uyeda and Gaila had their wedding at a tournament! "Frank (pictured) was one of the nicest people and very h...elpful to a rookie in karate. We ranked together when I was going to my shodan, at the start he said don’t worry at the end of this I will still be a black belt and you will be exhausted" he laughed and six hours later I was exhaustedand a black belt." -Sensei Peter Hanzal, JCCC Toronto Thank you for these memories Sensei! We're excited to make many more.
We have lost an amazing member of our family. Helmut Grossman was a dedicated instructor at the JCCC and spent over 40 years training, teaching, and creating memories with us. We are extending our sincere condolenes to his many loved ones. He will be greatly missed. Thank you for everything you taught us Sensei.
Submission #33 Shown are pictures from the Hamilton Itosu-Kai grand opening, receiving Nidan, students at the 2017 fall tournament, as well as photos from the very first time Hamilton participated in an Itosu Kai tournament before they joined the family. "Hope everyone is staying safe, healthy and can't wait to see everyone back on the dojo floor!!!!"... -Sensei Len Marcotte, Hamilton ON Thank you Sensei! We can't wait either. Stay safe and healthy
Submission #32 Memories of wonderful people submitted by Terese Tsumura. The late Howard Melbourne, pictured with Hilda Melbourne and Brian Smith had a Dojo in Deerhust ON. Our association was shaped by the contributions of many amazing people like these. Keep the memories coming! ... Stay safe everyone
Submission #31 "My favourite memories are countless so I'll narrow them down! These photos include: getting my first medal from my father at the dojo where I first joined in Deep River Ontario, meeting Sakagami Soke recently, and having the opportunity to speak on a panel about women in traditional martial arts. I have friends through this association that have become family and I love how we've stuck together through this challenging time. I hope everyone is healthy and I... can't wait to see you soon!" -Ann Chaplin, Honbu Dojo
Submission #30 "I want to submit a picture of Sensei Tim Sullivan from way back when he was just a white belt. I have so many memories going to rankings and tournaments with him they are all my favourite. Karate kept us close. Im sure he would have been happy to see I’m back at it." This memory was sent to us by April, who joined her father Timmy Sullivan in Pembroke ON and then in Chapeau QC when he first opened his dojo there.... Thank you so much for sharing this with us April! Sensei Tim was an amazing mentor and friend to so many in this community. We hope to see you and cheer you on soon!
Submission #29 "Karate has introduced me to a lot of great experiences, from travelling the world to train, compete and meet new friends. I’ve got a family in Itosu Kai. People I talk to every day to share laughs and experiences with. Additionally, I think it’s safe to say I was the first crazy guy to propose to my wife during a sparring match at a grading! To keep fit during these times, we’re working out together during the zoom classes and doing some biking and walks.... Looking forward to the time where we can all get back together soon!" Sensei Mike Duval, Wasaga Beach ON Thank you for sharing this, and for everything you do! Stay safe
