Have you ever noticed the black cat on our Gin Noir label? Like so many of our products there is a story behind this! In the first half of the 18th Century there was a staggering increase of Gin sales in Great Britain. The Gin Craze resulted in Gin being perceived as the cause of the degradation of society. As such the British Parliament passed a number of Acts in the early to mid 1700s pertaining to the manufacturer, distribution and consumption of Gin. The Gin Act of 1751... prohibited gin distillers from selling to unlicensed merchants, restricted retail licenses and charged high fees to eligible merchants. Shortly thereafter gin makers and bars started manufacturing and selling in secret. An autobiography from that time titled The Life and Uncommon Adventures of Captain Dudley Bradstreet outlines how gin sellers found a way to show thirsty customers the way to Gin. I purchased in Moorfields the sign of a cat and had it nailed to a street window; I then caused a leaden pipe, the small end out about an inch, to be placed under the paw of the cat; the end that was within had a funnel to it. [When] I heard the chink of money and a comfortable voice say, 'Puss, give me two pennyworth of gin!' I instantly put my mouth to the tube and bid them receive it from the pipe under her paw. On March 26th 1921 Canada’s most famous schooner, Bluenose, was launched in the Lunenburg harbour. Bluenose was a source of great pride for Nova Scotians. Captained by Angus J Walters, her victories in international competition and appearance at the World's Fair in Chicago in 1933 were morale boosters for Canadians during the Great Depression of the 1930's. The ironwork for Bluenose (and Bluenose II) was made at the Walter’s Blacksmith shop (where Ironworks Distillery is loca...ted today). Throughout this year Lunenburg’s favourite centenarian will be celebrated. Apprentice Distiller Job Overview: Things are getting busy at Ironworks Distillery and we are seeking another full-time member of the production team at our location in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. We are a craft distillery and work with a small and dedicated in-house team. Ironworks produces a broad line of spirits and liqueurs, operates two stills, and creates from scratch more than 60 barrels of rum as well as vodka, gin, whisky and a variety of fruit brandies and liqueurs each... year. Reporting to the Production Manager, as a member of our production team you will be involved in all aspects of craft distilling. The ideal candidate must be able to work well in a dynamic fast-paced environment, demonstrate excellent attention to detail, possess a positive & engaging attitude and will anticipate that this is a physically demanding position. Responsibilities and Duties The tasks include (but are not limited to): mash fermentations, distillation, barreling, bottling, labelling, cleaning of equipment & site maintenance. You may also be called upon to help fulfil market orders and assist the front-line shop staff in restocking shelves for the retail area. Qualifications and Skills If you would like to apply, you must be in good physical shape, capable of handling 20 kg loads with ease and regularity. You must work well with others in a fast-paced atmosphere. You must be able to balance a number of concurrent tasks and demonstrate excellent attention to detail. You should be comfortable in taking instruction, be quick to learn and willing to jump in and help out whenever and wherever needed. Computer skills would be an asset. A good sense of humour is a great bonus! Candidates should meet these requirements: Available for full time employment and amenable to flexible hours, including some weekends. This area is commonly referred to by the Ironworks Staff as the pig pen! Why? You might ask...well, rumour has it that prior to WWII this part of the basement was used to house pigs! At that time there was a dirt floor (and we suspect a run to the side yard which is long gone). The stone wall seen at the back of this photo is a common feature in many Lunenburg County buildings. When Lynne and Pierre bought the forge they added the concrete floor and now that space is used ...to age barrels of Rum, Apple Brandy and Pear Eau-de-Vie. Anyone who has visited the UNESCO World Heritage site of Lunenburg knows that this town is steeped in history. The building that Ironworks calls home holds an important place in the story of Lunenburg. In 1893 Thomas Walters acquired the land where he built his forge. The Walters family specialized in iron work for ships that were being built close by along the beautiful harbour front. The forge was in continuous operation (within the Walters family) until 2005. We were so sad to hear of the passing of Sylvia Booth. Too soon gone. When we first began work to build our distillery business here, we were fortunate to have Sylvia at our side, not only keeping the books straight but keeping the crazed founders in line. She was never put off by those less than adept at sums and actually found ways to make us feel quite competent. And she had such a great laugh!
