After 5 weeks of #Guelph & #WellingtonCounty generosity pouring in, we are ecstatic to announce the results of this year's Shoebox drive below. You didn't just ...meet our target of 500 Shoeboxes for 6 agencies - you crushed it! We are humbled by the unbelievable giving spirit in this community. Because of so many of you, 622 women in need in the Guelph-Wellington region will receive the gift of #kindness this holiday season. Thank you to all of the individual, group and corporate donors who assembled your Shoeboxes with enthusiasm and care or made a generous financial donation to support this local drive; to all the volunteers who worked tirelessly to promote our campaign within your own networks and see that each and every Shoebox was prepared for delivery with love and care; to all the crafters who donated your beautiful handiwork in the form of hats, mittens, headbands, facial scrubbies, etc. with love in every stitch; to all of you who took the time to write touching handwritten note cards for each Shoebox; to every local media outlet, individual or group / organization that spread the word through print or social media; and last, but certainly not least: to our drop-off hosts, who donated your space to allow us to collect Shoeboxes and hats throughout this amazing community, and who pumped the campaign every chance you got. THANK YOU, WE COULD NOT DO THIS WITHOUT YOU! Having a family member with a mental illness is stressful. In addition to coping with day-to-day living, families can experience tremendous guilt, fear, grief, ...anxiety, self-doubt and uncertainty. Each family member may react differently to the situation, but it’s important everyone understands that the person dealing with a mental illness must always be treated with dignity and respect. Keep notes about what has been happening; it can help you see patterns, etc. Make a list of questions you may want to ask the doctor. Offer choices to the person such as, Will you go to the hospital with me, or would you prefer (name a friend) go with you? Have a plan for dealing with crisis situations such as who to call, what services are available, and who can support the person and family through a crisis. Make sure you are looking after yourself too. If you’re struggling to help someone you love, call your local branch of Canadian Mental Health Association or go online for resources. Many self-help organizations offer information and support to families. CMHA.ca/Resources What strategies have you used to help a loved one dealing with mental illness? Share in the comments.
