Repost @midwifemarley If I could have a everytime I answer this..... There's a good chance you will! But thats a good thing. Its a good sign though if you do, it means you're pushing in the right place. I don't know if there are any stats but in my experience I would say around 50% of women will poo when birthing their babies. ... It's natural, normal and the midwives won't bat an eyelid. If you're worried about your partner seeing, the liklihood is that they won't get a chance as the midwife or nurse will wipe it away before you can say "poop" For a midwife, hearing that you need to poo is actually quite exciting, it means the baby is probably on their way! I'm sure many of you will resonate with this #birth #pregnancy #thirdtrimester #childbirth #labour

Repost @nadiannone Let’s normalize Cesarean sections and stop shaming people that have them! About two weeks before I had Hunter my doctor and I decided we’d plan my cesarean section due to Hunters size and him not being in the proper position to try naturally. It was the scariest yet best decision I ever made and I have no regrets! ... This pregnancy I have the option to try naturally or to plan my cesarean again and I am choosing to plan my cesarean if everything goes as planned. I will always cheer on and respect ALL moms no matter how you choose to give birth to your child. Repost @thebirthhive My FAVOURITE birth analogy! This simple visual is great at painting a picture of how to position your body in order to efficiently move your baby down and (eventually) out! Now, let’s pretend you wanted to get the ketchup out - but you can’t bang away on the bottom of the bottle. Which positioning of the bottle is going to do the *best* job coaxing the ketchup out? Keeping the bottle level? Or turning the bottle upside down and lettin’ gravity do it’s thang? Same goes for your body during birth - both while labouring AND when pushing your baby out!

Repost @bumptobabyacademy WATER BIRTH . If you have been around for some time, you probably noticed that I’m passionate about water birth . Water birth offer plenty benefits for the mom, making it the most incredible birth experience for many of us. If you are and you want an informed and better birth experience check in bio the online antenatal-hypnobirthing course that I have created .... . There have been five randomized trials on waterbirth, and so far they show that waterbirth holds several potential benefits for mothers including lower pain scores, less use of pain medication, less use of artificial oxytocin, shorter labors, a higher rate of normal vaginal birth, a higher rate of intact perineum, less use of episiotomy, and greater satisfaction with the birth. . Other common benefits are: Relaxing, secure, warm and drug free environment . It may help you to focus and be more relaxed. . Keep you in an uprigth mobile position that may help to dilate quickly. . Increased sense of control. . Some woman prefer to dilate into the tub or shower and get out before the pushing stage and give birth on dry land. You would prefer to dilate and give birth inside the tub or in an up right position in the shower . A waterbirth may be followed by the birth of the placenta in or out of the water. . Have you consider to have a water birth? Have you had a water birth? . Beautiful birth by @tesoromaspreciado . . See more

A great visual of the average time breakdown of the stages of labour. As we discuss with our clients, typically, the longest part of labour is the early stage. If you are planning a hospital birth, you will be home during this stage. It’s key to REST as much as possible to conserve your energy for pushing! This can be hard to do, but with the support of your birth team if will be easier. A warm shower, bath, lots of hydration, nourishing foods and naps are great options durin...g this phase. . . . . . The toilet is a great place to labour! Repost @onestrongmamaprenatal What is the best way to relax the pelvic floor during birth? Try the toilet! It can be VERY effective. It’s a place that you are used to relaxing down there and as such just sitting there can allow for a deeper relaxation and release. Note that this can increase the intensity but welcome it- it’s also encouraging progress! I encourage my clients to go to the bathroom approximately once an hour. It’s import...ant to empty the bladder to make space for baby’s descent. It is a good idea to change positions every hour anyway and the bathroom is a nice transition to your next position. Spend a few contractions (or an hour, if you want!) on the toilet before moving to your next position. I’ve also found it can be a good place to begin pushing as again- it’s a place people feel more comfortable pushing stuff out (promise this is cuter than the stuff you normally push out on the toilet ). Did you labor on the toilet at all? Repost @welcomebabies_lactation EPSOM SALT BREAST SOAKS Mamas did you know soaking your breasts in epsom salt can help sore nipples, engorgement, milk blebs, plugged ducts and mastitis. An epsom salt soak before breastfeeding helps to open the milk duct opening and also aids in healing. If you have a plugged duct massage the hard lump while doing this soak. ... What to do! 1 Fill a bowl with warm water, deep enough that the breast can be submerged 2Place 2 teaspoons of Epsom’s salts per cup of water and dissolve before putting the breast into the water 3Then lean over the bowls so your breasts soak in the solution 4This should not be painful and any cuts or trauma can be covered with a lanolin or all purpose nipple ointment 5Leave soaking in very warm water until water is cool or at least 5-10 minutes 6Wash off solution with plain water after, to wash away the salty taste for baby 7The salts may act as a diuretic for excess fluids in the breast 8Repeat at least 2 times a day before feeds or more frequently (before every feed) if needed 9Usually good results can be felt in 24 hours You can do this for up to 3 days if desired The information here is general and not a substitute for personalized treatment from a medical professional. If you are experiencing signs of mastitis and flu like symptoms please reach out to your health care provider. Repost @nursedoula.jaz , & Also known as the 3 R's, , & are a combination of tools that birthing people use to cope with labour. Sometimes they are planned during pregnancy, and other times they are spontaneous. They often change throughout labour as you progress, and can include affirmations, visualizations, movement, breathing techniques, and may be performed alone or with a support person. ... The use of techniques that help you feel relaxed, which may be breathing (deep breathing or "pant-pant-blow" are classics and easy to remember), moaning or other vocalizations. Remember to keep your noises low, as high pitch noises alert our bodies that we are suffering and cause the release of stress hormones. You may take yourself somewhere in your mind, to a happy memory, a time where you felt powerful and accomplished, to a relaxing oasis, a future goal, ect. You may also fixate on a physical visual, which could be something you have with you or something random (a mark on the wall, a painting, a hole in your partners shirt ) that helps anchor you to the moment. This can involve rhythmic movements, as seen by the incredible birthing person in this video. It can involve rocking, swaying, positions, comfort measures, partner support, baths, showers, massage; anything that makes you feel more comfortable. Another aspect of this R is having rhythmic thoughts. Most birthing people who are coping with labour state that they had a rhythmic thought going through their mind during contractions. This is a great opportunity to incorporate various affirmations, which you can share with your support team beforehand if you want them to say them to you for support. The techniques you use to stay relaxed and incorporate Rhythm, when used repeatedly, become a ritual to help you get through contractions. 3 R's by Penny Simkin Words by @nursedoula.jaz reposted from @doulaviewllc "Believe it or not, this was at about 9 cm dilated. Repost @nsdoula Cesarean Birth/ Belly Birth or C-Section. Let's talk about it. Interesting Facts: 1. You still delivered your baby (Just through the sunroof!) and you’re still a bad-ass birther. ... 2. 35% of all babies are born via the belly in British Columbia. This number is higher than the WHO’s recommended average of 10-15%. 3. According to an article written by The Cochrane Review, having continuous support throughout labour increases the chances of having a spontaneous natural delivery and decreases the risk of needing medical intervention. 4. If there are no complications, you can still get immediate skin to skin with your baby. As doulas, it is our job to support you to the best of our abilities regardless of the outcome. Depending on the situation, there will be times where we will be with you in the OR or occasionally we will be waiting for you on the other side. Your primary birth partner is allowed in the OR with you 99% of the time! Although everything in the external environment might change, the hospital staff and your support team try to make the experience as relaxed as possible. There are always tools that we can use prenatally to hedge your bets on a natural delivery, however, sometimes the unexpected happens! Do your research pre-labour and identify any discomfort that you might be harbouring around cesarean birth. It's a really good time to talk to your care providers and ask any questions that you might have. One of the biggest reasons why birthers come out of their experience feeling at peace is because they were always aware of their options and they were an active participant in every decision being made. #cesarean #bellybirth #birth #northvan #northvanmom #doula #vancouverdoula #birthphotography #csection #obgyn #midwiferycare #vancity #lionsgate @mothersway.doula

Repost @thenewbornartist It’s an educational Sunday! Look! It’s BIRTHDAY FROSTING!!!! Well actually... this waxy substance is called Vernix Caseosa - and it is a result of an important secretion - of a special oil - created in baby’s sebaceous glands. ... Vernix typically begins to accumulate in the last trimester of pregnancy and is thought to not only protect the baby in utero, but it also serves as a mechanism of defense after baby is born. In the past, as soon as baby emerged from its protective womb, it was quickly whisked away from its mother to have that gunk wiped off, be given its first bath, have a whole series of tests taken, procedures done, and injections given. Luckily, research has shown delaying baby’s first bath- and allowing that vernix to reside on the skin - has a number of health benefits! It has antimicrobial properties. Vernix has wound healing properties. It moisturizes and hydrates baby’s skin. It can help regulate baby’s body temperature. Some cool facts: Recent studies have shown that vernix contains antimicrobial amino acids that block invasive bacteria present in the amniotic fluid from meconium contamination. After baby is born, these amino acids work to protect against harmful bacteria such as: B. streptococcus, E. coli, Staph aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans, Listeria monocytogenes, Serratia marcescens, and Klebsiella pneumonia. Umm... that’s AMAZING!!! As the movement toward evidence-based practice has become standard, more hospitals are no longer bathing infants. So, when you deliver your baby, don’t be surprised if they arrive with a thick coat of vernix. It is there for a reason! Instead of washing it off, use that time to snuggle up to your baby and enjoy the magic of skin-to-skin..... celebrating this perfection in its entirety. And if you are a friend or a family member of someone who chooses not to bathe their baby after birth, make sure you support - and even celebrate them - for working so hard to keep their new baby healthy. Chrissy Teigen shares about her recent loss @chrissyteigen We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we’ve never felt before. We were never able to stop the bleeding and give our baby the fluids he needed, despite bags and bags of blood transfusions. It just wasn’t enough. . . We never decide on our babies’ names until the last possible moment after they’re born, just before we leave the hospital. But we, for some reason, had start...ed to call this little guy in my belly Jack.So he will always be Jack to us.Jack worked so hard to be a part of our little family, and he will be, forever. . .
